Default Turbo expertrs,please help

I went to look at a turbo today for my new impreza and did not buy due to a concern with the amount of free play in the shaft. It is a roller bearing turbo and it had a bit of up and down play like some of the cosworth turbos i have had in the past.It also had a small amount of in and out play...any expert views on this,as i would imagine a roller bearing turbo to have no play whatsoever ???

regards mark

No, Roller Bearing Turbo's do have 'play' in them from new. Only if you've felt what a new one is like could you assess the condition of a second hand one really.

a journal bearing turbo should have no in & out movment because of the thrust bearing, a roller bearing usually has a small amount. Both normally have a bit of up & down movment.
