budget car.. MG ZR, Peugeot 306D
need another run a round (we only have 1 car between us at the mo ) i want something that looks half respectable, cheap to run & reliable, around the 2k mark.
i like the 306 turbo diesel, looked at one yesterday ('99 hdi) but it had a awful paint match on the side, seen a few others advertised but can't see any in a reasonable distance that i feel compelled to buy....
the other option is an MG ZR 1400cc, i know a few people who have had them & they are cheap to tax, insure & good on fuel, seem to be reliable if you change the headgasket & waterpump when the belt is done aswell, i quite the look of them aswell, especially the 'trophy blue' version.
any good/bad points on the above, anyone got one for sale in the next few days......
btw, 306 miles seem to be around 120k which seems fine for them, MG's i've been looking at are around 50k

MG ZR - good on fuel but u look like a cock
306 - even better on fuel, still have that little turbo whistle, little bit girly but then id say some will think u have bigger balls driving one of these than a zr
I bought a 306 for my misses as her first car, was such a great rundarund, and a comfy drive. Bit plasticy but what cars arnt these days
well was great untill i did this.
Also as has been said if u fancy something a little bit bigger, and more classy maybe
A mk4 golf TDI, also bought one of these for my misses a while back
It was a Gt tdi with 150 bhp, 50 mpg to the gallon, had 119 on the clock and i sold it about 6 months ago for Ł2750
but theres plenty on the normat tdi's out there now easily under 2k. very reliable, unbelievable fuel economy, and still a nice looking car, think its aged well. also they are good for resale, even the mk3's are still comanding well over Ł1000 fo a good one!
in fact i was so impressed with the mk4, i have now bought her the mk5 gt tdi sport, and will buy the mk6 when the prices come down in a few years

its mainly for a work hack, i found a good ZR at the right money but the guy is away at the moment the only thing with the diesel cars is they have done a lot more miles & most show it i don't want something that looks like shite parked on the drive.......
i could do with a car today but i have worked it so i won't be desperate untill about the 4th January
the 306 i looked at would have been fine if it didn't have a half arsed repair on one side

dont buy a ZR then
Plenty of tidy tdi golfs out there for your budjet.
100k is nothing on a diesel
as i said our old mk4 had done 120k but you wouldnt know it.
even the interior was mear on mint

i don't mind the ZR, looks ok as standard, as for golfs, its not so much the mileage, its most of the ones i have seen look battered
i've been offered cheap good examples in the past but never needed one when they were about..... it dosn't help not living in London anymore, i knew so many people in the trade around my old area that things were always coming up.

Just feel that the Zr is like a chavs next step when his bird pops a baby out and the saxo is just too small

theres a few ZR's near me, all owned by people 30 or above, one down the road is trophy blue & always really clean, it was that & the value to run one of my mates one that got me thinking more on the idea...
i like the golfs when you get a good one, we had a GT TDI 150 at powers, 212bhp & 350 lbs/ft, that was great fun

306 HDI mate, i get 50 around town 58 on a run, Ł98.00 year Insurance, Has Air Con, Rain sensitive wipers and half leather, cost me about Ł700 quid, quip little remap off Stu for about 220ft lb Torque, 5th gear between 40mph and 110mph and driving really sensible 620 miles to Ł52 worth of diesiel

focus diesels are fine till they hit a problem, then can be very expensive, focus petrol, i can't find a decent 1.4, the reasonaby priced ones are over on the mileage or shite colours etc,,,,
the 306 can give awesome miles per gallon & are reliable, the MG is a good for the money car thats cheap to run etc..

i'm i the only one other the guzzler that likes the zr? they look pretty decent witht he multi spokes, supposed to handle well? and being a 1400 cheap on tax and insurance.
other then a swift gti i cant think of a na 1400 thats has more power? 100bhp.
probably fall apart being a rover but if u get a late low miler you can shift it long before that starts happening lol

already had a look Rhys problem is that its not a cheap car to run i'm in budget mode at the moment, we bought the house this year, spent about 15k on odds & sods in the last 6 months, but now the only debt we have is the mortgage so i want to have a few tight months & try to save a bit more cash

It is cheap to run mate. Im in same situation as you! Spending same amount etc, and in proper economy mode atm. The 306gti is half about on running costs and it can still satisfy your rev head when you want. The hardest part is finding a non chaved standard one.

Guzzler, 306 DT's are fine cars. Nowt special but handle ok (though havent driven a ZR to compare) my mum has a R plate one (XU9 engine not HDI)
Look out for leaking oil, its more often than not the rocker cover gasket, dead easy to sort but a good haggle point, also if the airbag light is flashing/on its worth checking the seatbelt pretensioner connections under the seat (I cleaned and reconnected mine and it solved the problem), but again, another haggle point, and if the heater isnt very good check its bled correctly (bleed nipple is toward the back left of the intercooler)
Front end knocking isnt uncommon but is probably ARB drop links (Ł17)
About all i can think of at the moment.
Steve
EDIT to add: Check the roofskin isnt corroding around the sunroof
EDIT2: Hold the trip reset button in and turn the ign on then it counts down from 10 to reset your service light

Quite tempted to sell you mine! LOL! Ive got a T plate Ph3 306 TD, its the last of the newer shape ones before they went HDI! 88k, full main dealer SH, half leather, rain sensing wipers, climate control, properly high spec too!! If i didnt love it as much id sell you it!
Id definately recommend one though, mines a 5dr but handles quite well!
I think its worth avoiding the HDI's though as the fuel pumps are fucking ridiculously expensive and i think they are quite prone to failure!!
