Default usb/com ports....how do i change them????

As title....

I am trying to get VagCom working but it wont connect for some reason.....

Someone has said this
"if no connection is available go to to device manager on your pc>ports COM/LPT and make sure the usb cable is routed to the correct com port 1 - 4 if its routed to something stupid like 11 or something.. go to properties>advanced and change it to 1-4"

How do i do that......i have gone into Device manager but cant see the "Ports" Section

Tiff,

What com port have you set Vagcom to work with. ?
This must be the same port number that your PC com port is using.

Does your computer have proper serial port built in or are you using a USB to serial converter. ?

in device manager there is a whole section for ports, click the + and youll see all the serial devices listed under it, one of them will be called "hongkong ebay special USB com port pile of shit" you can right click that one

Tiff, how are you connecting the car to the PC ?

Does the PC have a built in serial port or are you using a USB converter ?

I have got an OBD 2 connector to usb.......i am using that but it only has 5 pins in it, which i thought was a little strange as the connector on the car is a 16 pin one....

Tiff,
The OBD connector doesnt need many pins and only a few are used for ECU comms.

Is this lead in 2 parts or is in one length ?

Are you sure this lead is designe dto work with Vagcom ?

If its a specific lead, you probably have to install a driver for the lead first.

Does the PC ask you for a disk when you plug the lead in ?
(It should have done at least once)

Tiff,
It all depends on how its configured with Vagcom.
If it really does work with the software then it will have a driver built in or ask for one to be installed.
Either way, Vagcom will say its not connected or it will ask for a driver !

The best advice is to go back to your supplier...sorry.

do you have a section entitled UNKNOCN DEVICES with a little yellow "?"

this will probably be this USB cable youve bought.

if not someone's sold you a fake cable

I think there is a problem with the cable in all honesty.......

I have mailed another guy who tests his cables prior to sending them out, he assures me his will work..........we will see

Cheers Simon for the help.

Jim- The only section i have that i think it could be is universal serial bus controllers.......does that make sense

if you plug it in and it doesnt do the funky noise that it does when you plug USB stuff in, it's a dud (either a con or broken)
