just read in newspaper that NASA have tested an unmanned plane to fly at 10 times the speed of sound. recorded at 7000mph which is nearly mach 8 or 9! how cool is that?!!
if they introduce that to commercial flights it means you could get anywhere in the world in 2 or 3 hours!
i want a go!!
and believe it or not they werent testing out karls new stage 10 cossie engine!

Yeah i read about this a while back,
From heathrow to Sydney in 3 hours
how good would that be
I also watched President Bush talking at a NASA convetion about pouring loads of money into the travel to mars project,
wish they would send him to mars

Jesse, do you know how the SR71s engines worked? I think they were a combination of TurboJet and RamJet, but not sure if it waas all one unit?. If so, they that theortically runs with intake velocities of both super and sub sonic.

out of curioscity, why does traveling "supersonic" affect anything?
i was under the impression that travelling at the speed of sound doesnt change the physical properties of any mass (ie the engine or the air) so why do the laws of physics appear to change when you go supersonic?
just curious

Jim, IIRC in the intake tracts ahead of the first fan/compressor blades, you get a shockwave form which means all the air entering the engine is extremely turbulent.

ok ive just remember what sound actually is (i was thinking of it as an energy wave like light n stuff) so now it makes sense

The SR71 engine at least looks like a standard jet engine with a moving cone type arrangement directing the chockwave outside the intake so the air would be subsonic at the forst compressor stage.
Jim, the laws of aerodynamics do flip around when you pass the speed of sound.

You learn something new each day. The J58 is indeed a combination of a turbojet and a ramjet:

wow that engine is soo cool. Combining both ramjet and turbojet and just using vains to direct the airflow thorugh the right part of the engine! Simple but effective.
But it aint the same as a scramjet is it which is what this x-43a is it?

Ramjets need subsonic airflow into the combustor to get a propper burn, hence the diffusers etc, whereas scramjets can have supersonic air in the combustion chambre, apparently the air entering and leaving a scramjet takes about one milisecond to do so......hence for scramjets you need a very fast burning fuel (hydrogen
