Default Numberplates

I am after a small numberplate for my car, not the motorbike types, but the ones with legal sized font but the plate cut just above and by the sides of the letters & numbers.

I have been looking for a picture just to clarify it but cant, however I do know Twins has 1 on the back of his S2.

Are these legal, and where can I get one done? As it was supposed to be a suprise christmas presant from my good lady but every keeps telling her it's illegal!?

Cheers

How long is the number plate?
im pretty sure there is legal margins and letter sizes, but not the plate itself
so if you had A1 you could have a legal tiny plate as long as the gaps around the letters are the right size.
I'm not 100% sure, but i thought that's how it worked.

Is it not something like 11mm around the edge... not sure for definite, but that number sticks in my head from a conversation about this before.

Yes 11mm between number letters and 22mm between character sets, 11mm above and below numbers and at ends of plate, I cut mine down to leave just 11mm at the ends, as I have two 1's so is a bit shorter but legal.
You can have them as big as you like, the plate not the characters, like the big rover 75 ones, as the 11mm is a minimum.
Certain import vehicles can use smaller plates.
Any plate made now has to also contain supplying places details such as postcode, getting very strict on enforcement about anything that's not meant to be there too.
