520d get a manual
525d either manual or auto
530d get auto
535d auto box only, manual not available
i-drive is fine once you get used to it, plus a lot of the stuff can be done with the voice control if that was fitted as an option

So you can update the i-drive software in the car like you could say on your phone??
An E60 530d M Sport is deffo number one car at the moment for me, they just seem such exceptional value. Anybody any experience of the results of remapping them? How does it knock economy? I know you can see over 500lb/ft from them!
Also did they make any changes to the cars as they get newer? I know the newer M-Sports have nicer wheels than the older ones.

Remaping from Evoultion chips is Gauranteed better fuel economy or your money back!
There was a face lift to the E60 range last year.

Dealer only job for the i-drive at the moment.
There have been 3 updates to the cars and specs since 2003 when they were launched.
2005 they upped the engine powers and upped the basic spec a bit.
Wheels have never changed just some Sports come with the optional 19" spyder alloys which look much better than the standard ones.
Easiest way to tell a pre2005 update car from a post update one is the update car has a start button.
then in around 2007 they did what is referred to as the LCI this was when they started doing all the economy stuff like the stop start engine and the brake energy regeneration stuff, easiest way to spot these cars is they have LED taillights.

Seems I am a single voice in a BMW loving thread. Also seems I did indeed get the average mpg wrong, it's not 16 point whatsit like I thought. Our average is 17.6. They must ahem loosen up after a few miles. Being a saddo, I have taken photo, not sure if this is indeed the average but would hope it is not instant mpg.
Still stand by the comment about em cutting out as well, confirmed via our workshop that the car is off to BMW to 'correct' the fault.
Drove works one today, still say they are a pile of excrement and absolutely useless for the job I do

Well using the iDrive trip computer the BMW mostly has been getting used only in town (North London to Central London) and on the 2.2 straight 6 petrol my dad gets anything from 18-25mpg. He doesn't drive with economy in mind though and doesn't know when to change gear properly . I've never done a trip in it anywhere so can't comment on what MPG I'd get but I'd be seriously annoyed if I couldn't get 30mpg+ out of it.

Can't be that bad on fuel surely? My M5 does 28mpg on the motorway at 80mph cruising....so if one of these is only managing 30ish in a diesel then i don't see the point (with the extra cost of fuel).
oh and 500lb/ft from a remap? surely that's NOT right!!!!! Nm maybe?

I'm now in a final decision between an E39 540i Sport OR an E60 525d M-Sport, will be early next year when I have space for it tho - gives prices time to fall some more

I've gone from an M3 to a Passat tdi
Be nice to get back in an M, and like torque
They say jan/feb is time to buy, even more so this time round I reckon, I'm holding out for then.

there will be some SERIOUS performance bargins next year, I recon that you will be able to pick a half tidy E60 M5 up for 25k or less, 507BHP for that money and that level of car is mental!

Agree............ There's already half a dozen E60 M5's with about 40,000k on the clocks on Pistonheads at under 30k.
Absolutely amazing bargain.
I may have to have a re-think on the TVR.

Will, how r you fella? Not used the bike for a good few months I am ashamed to say. It's sat in the garage on its carpet underneath its Ducati cover!!!!!! Might sell it soon as my mate wants her, so I will be in the market for a 998. Will deffo arrange a shakedown ride out next year (after I have been re-assessed at work, in the middle of bloody January, how cold will that be?)
Anyway, sorry for the tangent and back on topic, I hate 530D's. Not too keen on our 330d either, but that's for another thread.

There are some cheap enough E60 M5's now boys! Look past the stolen/recovered bit and check out the price! http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...2925&logcode=p
Here's my friend's site who has one up for £27k on a 55 plate http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...4847&logcode=p

M5 is the performance choice, and a mental one at that. A car that can just about beat an early standard Gallardo. And on a rolling start live with a Nissan GT-R.
The runnign costs are huge. 10-11MPG a few friends of mine have experianced.
For the rest of the range I would say the 535d would be a good bet. Much more complete than the 530d and with a re-map will be quicker than the 550i
