Have known Mark for many years now so have got to know him very well, so im fully aware of that ' youve fuc*ed up' look he gives when you have strayed from whats best for your car. Got that look when I showed him my roll cage .
Would like to get it sorted with a sensible cage that dont look like the scaffolding on the 2012 Olympic site. Any pictures, suggestions on what is available, hate cages so not my expertise. At 63 need to be able to get in & out without having to read page 69 of the Karma Sutra & want to keep all seats, maybe removable door bars would be good.

Excellent news you are thinking about this rod, your car really needs it.

You'll have to take the dashboard out to fit anything worthwhile Im afraid mate!

You'll only have to take the dash out to chop some bits off it before fitting it back in though

I'm sure if you want the standard look to it this would be the best option, cut around the cage flock it then put it back in.

Yes sorry I meant take out and put back in, just pointing out its extra hassle at this stage as I know Rod has only just sorted out all his dials and switches etc recently in the dash, so a pain to now be taking it out, worth it though

my safety devices one was tight to the dash,didnt need to cut it.

there will be better cages but its better than nothing.

Rod we can add to your existing main hoop with A posts and a roof bar, If you really want them have bolt in door bars like in Ali's Escos we done.

Not always the case with cages but from what i've seen the SD cages look to be a good off the shelf choice

What he wants is probably alot like what I wanted from mine. Just a simple'ish cage to give a bit of protection if the car goes over and a bit of rigidity, but not too intrusive.

I went for Safety Devices. OK, so that's not been without its drama's, but at least I don't have to repaint the interior and butcher the trim too much.

I know that if I could have had a custom cage built in the car as a finished job I would have gone for that, but in my experience they are significantly more involved than that?

The safety devices cage i have seen for the Saff was awful, poor fitting and not the best quality.
If you want one that is designed properly that fits with the whole interior in place then you want what i have in mine.
The cage was fitted before any interior was removed, is excellent quality finish, superb fit to the car (nice and tight to the body). It has removable door bars, properly fitted and bolted in place on mounts fabricated in the car.

Id have thought its preferable to him having it at the back of the dash close to the bulkhead than having the bars coming down obtrusively into the cabin like this:

All depends on whether he wants to mutilate the dash.
Wish i had now since i've stripped the whole thing.

Still P&P come highly recommended and can do as you wish (in front or behind dash).

No Rod dont want to look hardcore, one thing I aint is hard no cutting the dash for me im afraid.
Like the look of that cage, but the age of my likely passengers, dictates a seat & not a hammock for my rear passengers. What price level is that.

In reality you arn't going to have rear passengers if you have a cage fitted, it would be far to dangerous with all the tubing in such close proximity to them (even if they could get in).
Removable door bars makes it easy enough to get in. Heres a pic when i had std seats in place.

The Front cage section that goes infront of the dash makes it a little bit difficult to get in and out of the car.

I fitted a SD cage in my car and didn't like the front section because I kept hitting my feet when I got in and out of the car which pissed me off so took the front section back out.

If I was going for a full cage I'd definatly get it behind the dash.

No will no longer be used on a daily basis thats for sure, if I go to shows or competitions I usually have my son & his mates with me, always had a car load. I HATE CAGES .

There are two ways to install a cage: doit properly or don't do it. Going half-way makes no sense as added safety is verylimited, the car is uncomfortable and the shell is not strenghened by the cage properly.

I used to think half-cages and things like that made sense but after some years with such cars around me I really think that makes no sense at all. You can go for a design with a bit lower door bars etc. but it's really worth to do basic layout as per FIA rules and have all the suspention pick-up points extensions etc. As i understand Rod only does top-seed runs with this car, if there is some major suspension/wheel failure the only kind of accident that will happen is masssssive roll and then you need really good cage/seat compo, preferably with HANS device really to come out of it like nothing happened.

oh gotcha i would go for a safety devices bolt in cage maybe with the bolt on door bars but others may have better suggestions

Like I said just add the A posts into the main hoop and leave the dash inplace. Problem solved.

1700 quid for a not very works spec roll cage would make me think about buying a ex works shell already seam welded and fitted with the best type of welded in roll cage that passes through the dash and into the strut turrets.

then you can always rebuild your mechanicals into a nice road car thats never been butchered if you want to change back.

You must have your seat quite far forward though

This is my car after a big roll and landing on the bonnet/front screen with a half cage fitted.

if you look you can see how the cage looks like it hasn't moved over the co drivers head ( left hand drive) yet the shell has bent into the shape of the cage over the co drivers head, now imagine your in that car with no cage and what it could of looked like.

Why don't you let Danny just add to what he's already done? I'm sure he is more than capable to make a cage without cutting dash, and good enough for an accident, if ever one happened.
