i know someone that was caught, a Ł500 fine on the spot for a first offence and tank random testing over the next year where he also has to show his diesel receipts to prove he's buying legitimately. second offence i believe and you forfeit the vehicle.
if your using it in a car your much less likely as it tends to be vans randomly stopped and checked.
at Ł1 a gallon from a building site near you its worth the risk.

i've been caught twice and let away with it twice
1st time was towing car to knockhill, my towcar was full to the brim with cherry, trailer had 2 baldy tyres(i didn't know about these), and lights not working on trailer, was 7am and snowing heavy, guy just couldn't be bothered and told me to get to fuck, i know how lucky i was, but
2nd time my car was lying outside my work
i worked in bonnybridge at the time which is a haven for red diesel, anyhow
they dipped my tank but couldn't do anything about it as itwas parked in a private car park and not on the public road, was obviously warned that if it was seen on the road it would be stopped and siezed,
anyhow lesson learnt
my 406 work horse has only ever seen red once since i got it and thats cause somebody got a loan of it, i only ever use white now, i'm not tempring fate the 3rd time

Iv got 250 litres just seems a shame to have it sat here and not use in my Derv,
Its boggo standard looking clean car, few years old all insured, tax and mot'd, it dont go fast enough to ever worried about getting done for speeding.
I do about 500 mile a week a moment
so 250 litres of cherry is 3000 miles of free travel, would be nice

ha ha a mate of mine ran it for years he was paid milage for useing his car for work lol
he was making Ł600 a month profit because he was claiming his fuel per mile. he never got pulled and even wrote a car off with red in the tank and never got a pull. the woman at work ran it in her car for 3 years then got caught with a full tank they took her car drained it flushed it out and billed her, in total with her fine it cost her just over Ł500 she ran a month on white then went back to red lol i got free dinners in the works canteen for my fuel tickets lol and as far as i no she's still at it lol

i have first hand experiance of the police and customs tugging me for a check and a dip, the bastards were near a car auction i was going past and i was in a hurry going somewhere so i did a crafty u turn and thought they didn't see me, next thing i know i'm the subject of a apb and on the run in their eyes, anyway i get stopped and asked quite politely to return just for a dip check which i agreed to do, soon as i get their the fucker pisses off and leaves me with a thicko from customs and a copper i wouldn't of pissed on if he self combusted in front of me. they checked everything twice and kept commenting that the tax was up in 2 days like i was lucky or somthing, i pointed out what the first copper said and i got the verbal shit spouted at me. the customs looked at my diesel and it was a really bright green and the old bill was asking more questions like can we do me,i said if it aint red theres no problem then.
so then the copper gave me a producer and says i'm lucky
a mate of mine who got done for smoking red got a 500 quid fine and if not paid there and then the car was going to get lifted. he paid up and after a load of questions and a producer got told to clear off.
about red being smokey is a myth imo, a mate who runs brand new tractors that cost 60 grand plus vat uses it all the time and it doesn't fuck them up or sound or look any differant to normal derv.

slim to no chance of gettin caught, money saved far outweighs the risk, keep away from sea ports and agricultural events if poss, these are the most common places I've heard people gettin caught

I don't know if its true or not, but I heard if they really wanted to fuck you, they can charge you duty for all the miles on the clock, which @ 100k+ miles will be a monumental fine.
