sound like someone put the wrong screen in it.
mabey the wiring is there but its tucked away somewhere.
its not hard to wiring it up though if the wires anit there, will have to use a relay and fues etc or you will more than likey blow the elements in the screen.
but you have to bear in mind that the elements might not even work, or partly work.

If you got the Haynes manual you have a wiring diagram to it.

The basic is just a switch and a relay. The magic is that hold current to relay comes from alternator. So the engine must be running to get heating to work.

The easyest way must be to check the local scrapyard for the right parts.

Ahh yes, I checked the haynes manual and saw that link to the alternator but I guessed it was some magic trickery to raise the RPM to keep more current flowing.. but maybe not, your answer makes more sense

Off to maplins I go....

Ok, I've had a look through the haynes manual and it seems to be a simple relay connected with an PNP transistor to the v+ of the alternator. I'm quite competent with electronics so that's simple enought to build, however the guys over here seem to think that the relay upps the REVS to keep extra current flowing AND it has a timer to switch off the heated after 5 minutes,....

Haynes doesnt seem to show this, so whether it simply isn't true OR both circuits are built into the relay I don't know.... If it's the lattter then i'm going to have to get the FORDS relay, an expenive part i'd assume :/

Anyone know?

some heated front screen switch off after a while, im sure my wife escort does, cant remeber about my fiesta as i had to change the screen a while ago cos i cracked it and it was cheaper to get a standard one from scrappy.
find what relay you need and let me know as i have a few floting about in the shed, other than that get down the scrappy.
anyone know for sure what car does? i got over 100 haynes manuals mate, im sure i could find a relay for the job out of that lot, lol

as for the extra current draw, i can see it upping the revs ( may be wrong) but what about old cars with heated rear screen and no ECU, how does the revs pick up then!
i think someones pulling ya chain dude, if you were to switch every thing on you car still runs dont it, i wouldn't worry to much about the revs thing TBH
