I know it is knocking on abit, but personally I would look to something like an escort gti.

Something a little older, less sort after but still comfortable and plenty of toys and a bit of poke.

Yes, the focus is a good car, but on 1200 I would expect a problem car, bottom of the barrell stuff.

spotted this but the front drivers wheel looks very iffy on both pictures of it???

if you just want a runabout go on autotrader and search cars with max price of 2k and you'll be suprised what you can actually get but imo i'd stay away from cars that are fetching 3k but there are ones going for 1k as you'll end up with a shed if you see my logic.

Would get a good solid car for that sort of money, not the fastest things on the road but a good solid car that will return good mpg.

^ What he said. That's why I'm getting the wife one In the new year (no point getting one now as she can't drive until then)

Looked at the Escort GTi and there are a few about but she just didn't want a Mk6 Escort. Can't get an Audi A3 for that money as I looked

I saw that last week, didnt notice the front drivers wheel until pointed out now, looks like its got some camber on it for some reason they are only ford wheels so should sit fine

By the way for £1200 or less a mk3 golf gti might be abit ropey, very tidy ones can go for more like £1500.

I got 1400 for my p reg 16v in reasonable nick, with 140k

Not at all mate. I've been looking for a while and they are easy to get in that price range. I found a green 16v GTi with 120k miles and an extensive history for £1200. Only reason I didn't get it was the wife wants a sunroof and as there are so many about I don't need to settle for anything other than exactly what I want. I've found a couple of exceptionally tidy 8v GTi's for under a grand.

This is my mates colour concept that he sold recently for £1300 , had 120,000 on it and still drove tight and did mid to high 30's on longer trips.

A £1200 focus is going to be (as said) bottom of the barrel stuff.
prices have risen on focus quite a lot the last 6 months due to supply and demand. a year ago you were spoilt for choice on a focus, not now days.

Id say yes go for a mk3 golf.

Half decent ones are going for about £1k, so 1200 should find you a half decent one.

dont expect a minter for that money, but you will get a good reliable car for that price.

Check for rust on rear arches and lower rear 1/4 sills.

Also mk3/4 are prone to electrical problems, but only cosmetic, usually you will fint the blower and heating vent lights dont work, sue to a shit built in bulb you cant replace. and also they seem to over charge on the alternator a little, which is why you always see mk3/4 golf with a side light bulb or brake light out.

As long as it has a good service history, you cant normally go wrong with a vw.

You may if your lucky even find a mk4 shape BORA TDI for that money. 1.9tdi 130bhp 50+mpg and just as quick as the mk3 gti.

Im on my 3rd golf now (which is my 6th VW!!!) cant go wrong with them IMHO.

If you want some decent links to help you search just ask, as im using about 6 Vw forums at the mo to sell my mk2 VR6.
