I have always used the honey and lemon drink, works ok

Also try some Bells mentholated Bronchial Balsam medicine, it looks like tar but works great.

Hope you get better soon

Tonsilitis? I used to get it REAL bad, absolute agony. Unless you've had them out of course lol.

usually lasts no more than a week, but properly knocked me out for couple of days.

I used to get glandular fevermany years ago very often (dirty derby/notts girls for ya...knew I should have stuck just to the Leicester lasses insted of broadening my scope ) which carried similar symptoms to what you've described. I used to just go doctors where they would prescribe penacillin (sp no doubt) which cleared it up very quickly in each case. Get down docs first thing.
The first time I had it, I left it thinking it would pass...ended up with loads of puss-sacks in my throat...not nice

My father in law complained about sore throat all day last Friday, then at the weekend could not eat or drink anything.

Went to the doctor on Monday sent straight to hospital and has just come out today.

Apparently had an absess the size of a golf ball inside his throat, had to have it drained and was on a drip due to lack of fluids.

They just look like white dots iirc (it was around 10yr ago now lol)....nothing else apart from what the docs gave me had an effect on it. Tried those throat sprays, did bugger all.

They nearly always tell you to call back in 48 hours. I always start my conversation with, 'I rang 48 hours ago'. Then they don't say that to you. They will tell you it's not on record, but they will think it's a fault at there end. I hope you fell better soon.

It took a couple days for it to go that far...I learnt my lesson though and always went straight to the docs after that initial hit. If your given a course to take then take the entire course ie dont just stop when you think it's cleared up as I found it had a tendency to reappear soon after. Just go docs tomorrow even if it feels like its eased off slightly...especialy as your going away soon.

Maria I had a similar problem a few weeks ago, horrible experiance.
I used Carvonia throat spray which was brillaint but was told by the pharmacist to get was prescribed anti biotics incase of infections.

What I done instead, worked wonders for me. Basically I got a small glass of luke warm water and mixed salt in it until it was sort of dissolved, I then gargled that a few times (no jokes) and it help clear my throat.

Hope this helps and get well soon.

Well it didnt make me better as such but was a great pain relief method and helped me swallow food better.
That Carvonia was great as I used that along with soothers etc and I was feeling 90% within 3 days. Sadly due to work commitments I dont get to see my doctor.

Well, the pain woke me up in the middle of the night it was horrible! ( and to top it all off i'd been dribbling on my pillow all night so had a soggy face! )

I rang the docs up this time and he said it sounds very likely that i have a saliva gland infection.... apparently anti-biotics dont help and i just have to keep my throat lubricated ( no puns please! ) with glycerine sweets! He recommended bog standard ibuprofen too!

Well, i managed to nod back off to sleep, and i woke up this morning, and it aint half as bad as it was!!!! my throat doesnt hurt as much, but the side of my face and jaw are still pretty swollen! poo.

so im gonna see how it is at lunchtime and then maybe go to the docs if it hasnt changed!

Thanks for all your advice though guys!

Glandular fever does manifest itself alot of the time in toncillitus and other swollen glands, it can stay with you for well over a year Maria, however it doesnt seem like you have described that to be sure they will need to do a blood test for it. you may have had a rection to somthing, especially as you say your face is swollen.
anyhow good luck and repair yourself soon.

I had similar symptoms as well as coughing up blood, I went to see the docs and after waiting for about 30 mins to be called in I opened my mouth, he glances in (for literally half a second) and says "yes you have a sore throat" and told me to get lost basically

I'd spent 2 days not even being able to swallow my own saliva! The only things I found that even slightly worked were the lozenges with anaesthetic and antiseptic to numb it a bit.

Personally I think it was mild tonsillitis, as my tonsils are huge anyway (i.e. like a second tongue) and since then it seems to be reoccurring more and more commonly (although not as bad yet).

You really should go and see a doctor. I don't have the slightest idea how can the diagnose anything over the phone.

It can be nothing or it can be serious as far as I understood none of us here is a doctor to tell.

Get some ice cream down yer, it soothes your throat. And if you get toffee flavour it'll lubricate it also.
