My words of advice are -

Keep it short, ideally no more than one side of A4 and most importantly keep it relevant - No employer needs to know that you were in the cubs or got a GCSE in Home Economics!

Your covering letter should do the work for you, the CV is just a quick reference to give the employer an idea of your relevant work experience, and/or qualifications.

Also, what program do i do it in? I have to email it for one particular job, but want to print it out too. I'm thinking word?

Word would be fine. It doesn't need to be fancy, just legiable and clear.
