Default Head gasket question

Missus golf 1.8t has just boiled over it has the dreaded white smoke, quite a bit of water leaving the exhaust with it, and when i left it for an hour and went to start it up, it was misfiring but stopped shortly after i know these arent good signs, is there any other ways to check if the gasket has definately gone?, the car is chipped which i know this will put strain on the gasket, the mileage is 120k any help will be greatfully received

A cylinder Leakage test will give best results, you may see some signs of failure on the spark plug too for a quick indication.

As above - a compression test then a leak down test will tell you for sure.

You need to do it in all of the cylinders and run both a "wet" and "dry" test.

I'd be wondering why it boiled over in the first place - check the water pump as these are prone to failing due to the shitty plastic impellors.

Thanks for ur help guys, my mate gave me his snap on test kit (sorry cant remember the actual name) but basicly u get the water bottle hot and but this large pipette in and if the gaskets fooked it changes the colour of the fluid, but the water wouldnt get hot enough and no water was being returned into the water bottle. its not loosing coolant and as there is no water returning to the water bottle, i would guess water pump as the fans only blow cold aswell he has quoted me £70 labour to do a cambelt and water pump on it which i thought was great so going to price the parts tomorrow sorry about the long post

Thats what i thought even once it was hot it still was smoking white smoke-not massively but it was still doing it and the miss didnt happen again (just the once in 3 times off starting it from cold- maybe the water pump packed up and warped the head :s GULP!

if thats the case id imagine the head gasket has gone and if not changed the next time you start it it will splutter again for the 1st miute or so whilst it burns the water from the bores
