theres a kid by me who has a team pro replica of my bike from the 80's and him and his mates have made a jump and ride it,they love the old school and i'm certain if its based on looks its old school everytime, and before some one says new school is better performance wise and stronger i know already. i have seen freestyle frames on radbmx.com that look stronger than a new motorcrosser

I have an 2008 eastern metal head which is IDEAL for a novice/learner and will have street cred- I know because I have one and the kids down the skate park think its COOL man... or somet like that.
They have em on Extreme- I think last time I checked they were Ł329.99 but its now techincally last years model so will be a bit cheaper. Has all the right bits that he will need to start off with and very hard wearing.
(also get him 10 inner tubes for Ł20 of ebay.... he'll need em)
As said dont get em an old bike the kids down the skate park dont understand old skool.

i'll agree on winstanleys being toss service. Alans in wigan is a great bike shop, from my point of view if your son wants to get into bmx you need to know what type of riding he wants to do i.e.
skatepark/street:
Trails/dirt:
Race:
As all of these bikes are made differently, a race bike wont take a skatepark session very well and a skatepark/street bike maybe too heavy for racing, if that makes sense.
Based on your sons height and age, and because it will be his first bike, i'd say go for something like this:
http://www.alansbmx.com/product_info...oducts_id=7184
Hoffmans are very well made imo, this would be good as a skatepark/street bike.
another in your price range:
http://www.alansbmx.com/product_info...oducts_id=7383
Please please take into consideration that BMX is a very dangerous sport, i stick to skatepark riding and over the years it has bitten me again and again, get your son some shin pads, gloves, and most importantly a helmet. Shin pads are a must, slipping a pedal tears your shins to pieces lol, happened many times to me and it hurts like hell
Shame you live so far away, i could have tought him the basics

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
http://www.winstanleysbmx.com/produc...Inch_Bike_2009
this would be perfect for his age/size
anything bigger wouldn't be suitable!
most come with a 20" top tube but that would be too big
i got this exact bike for my own brothers 11th birthday and its perfect and will not out grow
it until he is maybe 13 or 14
if you have any questions feel free to pm me, I have been Bmxing for way too long!!

can i point out somthing
new school is better as old school bikes tend to be worth loads more than new school bikes, and you won't care about snapping a new bike as its easily replaceable. however new school bikes look completely shit next to high end old school bikes like haro's,skyways,gt's,and the No 1 selling old school freestyler the DP Racing Firebird Freestyler.
my wheels
another of mine, a original team pro like the worlds no 1 ruffell rode
gen 1 bob haro
dp firebird freestyler
and another dp firebird

PF's Guitar God!!!
I have a Mongoose BMX which i find really good for doing jumps and general riding. The GT bikes are good too but the metal they use rusts really quickly, i owned 2 of them for 3 years and both rusted after 6 months. I've had the Mongoose for just over a year and have had no problems with it at all.
I say go with a Mongoose!!!
But if you really want to spend money, let me know i can prob build you a custom bike.

I didn't realise there was so much to it!!
The nearest BMX track to us is Hartlepool, they have an open practice session on a Saturday, it's my intention to try and take him down there so he can really enjoy the bike So I guess he's going to need a bike that can take some punishment

Well Kai chose it so he had better like it when it comes lol!!
We ordered it from Cycle World in Sunderland. The guy in the shop had 4 on order and had sold 2 so had 2 spare and we've bought one of them. Kai had chose one from in the shop but the guy in the shop went and got the Haro book and showed Kai that bike and that was it Kai decided he wanted that one.
I can't wait until Christmas now, I think I might even have a go down the skate park lol

That should be a very good starter bike for him, smaller gearing etc so he wont mash his chainring when he very first learns to drop in n (i know what i mean)
Good luck to him, if you ever want to bring him up to blackpool gimme a shout and i will happily teach him the basics
