Default Golf VR6 for daily hack?

Good idea or bad idea?

We know we want aGolf and preff a GTi for the extra toys etc. Found a couple of VR6's that fall into our price bracket. Are they worth a serious look or will I end up broke paying the fuel and maintenance bills?

Have you considered the corrado vr6? Friend of mine had one, he loved everything about it, apart from the fuel consumption

golf vr6 is 2.8 - corrado vr6 is 2.9 - both great engines but obviously not gonna be the cheapest in terms of fuel consumption. other than that cracking cars. had a couple of corrado VR6's myself.

I had a GTi 16v for 6months, was a good reliable car and went well when you rev it hard, the brakes were fantastic(disks all round) i only got rid because the gearbox was ruined, 1st 2nd and reverse sometimes point blank refused to go in and i couldnt be arsed anymore so got another car.
Apart from that i liked it, just make sure you get a 16v(150bhp as opposed to the 115 in the 8v) and you get the bigger 288 vr6 brakes on the front

Mate had a Mk3 VR6 as a daily hack and even though he is known as only having 2 gears in any of his cars (stop and flat out) and the fact it had 135,000 on the clock didnt have one prob with it over 20,000 miles.

Although as said they do drink petrol if you drive them hard.

Get a BMC carbon air filter and you wont find a better sounding car.

I drive a mk3 VR6 daily and get 25mpg out of it driving it uneconomically. Its done 157k and still no problems.
