Higher comp
bigger valve ports
higher lift camshaft
solid lifters
lower final drive

cast alloy crossmember with twin antirollbar setup and tension struts....castor adjustable
Koni adjustables all round.....

A Few shell differences.....there are over 130 different items listed in the 1600i supplimentary manual

Too much much to mention

rs 1600i's look a nice car but they are so slow, same goes for xr3i and 3, i have had the lot and me and the mrs once had a 3,3i,rs1600i,and a turbo at the same time and the turbo was a much better car and loads faster,we once had a bit of a race and her xr3 was faster than my 3i and they were both standard, maybe she's a better driver

yours standard ??
they handle really well mind but there was no performance differance between a 3i and rs16i, like i say my mrs xr3 was faster, it all changed when she got a rs turbo as that car used to upset people who didn't like a escort doing them, it was turbosystems tuned mind.

mines defo not standard anymore, but when it was still kept pace with standard escort and fez turbos, and used to happily do 135mph on the private road round the corner

my standard one which was a little cracker would not even do 115, ford clocks are not accurate over 70 imo

Cozzfather a RS16i would blitz a 3i easy! Mine went like fook and was 100% standard, infact it would have been quicker than a standard turbo (though you dont find any of them any more). They rev so well, a very under estimated car for it time.

My 16i was a good deal better than my mates 3i....and I have seen a few magazine articles listing the 16i as quicker round a track than a standard s2 rst and frst. They do handle

well my rs16i didn't seem any faster thats why i did a back to back and i would bet my dog a standard rs16i wasn't faster than a standard turbo, iirc in the good old days a properly set up standard turbo could acchieve lots more power than a rs16i.

i went from rs16i to rs turbo then to cosworth and never looked back, i nearly bought a gartrac g3 once and kinda regret not buying it as they were the best mk3 escort imo,a rs16i was a lovley looking car and the seats were very comfy and nice to look at,the kit and steering wheel added to the appeal for me

Cozz Father so did i, infact i had a RS turbo and RS16i at the same time. And while you can tweak a turbo to achive more power out of the box imo the 16i would have been quick and was a MUCH nicer car to drive. Mine used to rev like fook!

Sold them both had a cossie 400bhp it then sold it. Wish i stuck to bother 16i and S2 lol. Ohwell.

dont forget a 16i is 115bhp, and standard turbo is only what 132bhp, so not alot in it, and seems even less when out on the road, trouble is nowadays, not many completely bog standard 16i's or turbos about.

with some tweaking a standard turbo could show about 150 without a chip cam etc, dunno if anyone has a standard turbo tweaked up but 15 years ago they did.
another rs16i downside was the bulkhead cracking cos the brakes were a lhd conversion, shame i never i had a lhd one as i have only ever seen one and it was a x reg imported over here, iirc the rs16i come out first in germany.

ive got a standard s1 and my mate a standard rsi and there was nothing in it....if anything his was quicker off the mark...i then turned the actuator up for a little bit more poke (made 150bhp) and even then my turbo was JUST in front..

sounds about right, very little in it on the road, once did a 16i rolling road day in 2003 and my then 95bhp car kept pace with another 16i that hit 117bhp on the motorway.

The lower final drive helps......mine was about 135 bhp last time I rolling roaded it, but it pulled the limiter in 5th

Dose anyone know the cam or valve lift for the RS1600i camshaft?
Also when dose full lift occur?
Or can you give me the specs on In open, In close - ex open, ex close.

Just take the solid lifters out and stick some hydraulics in (and the cam to suit)

Resetting the lifters every few k miles was a pain in the ass when I had mine.

Tbh,and I'll probably upset a load of people on here but I simply don't rate the 16i at all, poor mans series one IMHO.Ive driven a couple of them back in the day and they were just a glorified 3i.wish I'd bought the sunburst red one just too put in the garage as it was mint and would be worth a few quid now.
