Default FAO All Snowboarders

My mate is off to Canada on a 5 month snow boarding trip, as it's his Birthday soon I wanted to get him a snowboard related present but I haven't got the first clue about snowboading!

He's not really a serious boarder but he has been about half a dozen times in the past and I think he's going to get well into it now. Any idea what I can get him? I want to spend around the £40 mark. I've been looking on the net and the best I've come up with so far is a specialist snowboarding backpack from Burton.

Any ideas / advice appreciated.

If you are going for a backpack, by far the most common is a Dakine Helipack. Its a very good piece of kit and is what I would recommend if you are getting something like that as a gift.

Other things that you could get for a similar price are:

Gloves/mitts (Burton/Dakine/Grenade are all pretty good)
Thermal base layers (Decent ones are key and you could just about get an Icebreaker merino wool top for this much, or for less money Helly Hansen are pretty good)
Dainese knee pads are around this price and very useful for beginners
A couple of decent beanies wouldn't go amiss as he'll be wearing them all the time day and night.

For browsing the following sites are good:

http://www.snowboard-asylum.com/
http://www.boardwise.com/
http://www.snowandrock.com/
http://www.twoseasons.co.uk/

Let us know if you see anything else you may consider getting and i'll let you know if its any good!

Phil has given you some great ideas, the only thing I would add is two way radio. It always handy off-piste

Usually you'd just drop it at the local shop every week for a quick wax and edge, especially if he's not that serious. if you do get an waxing iron then remember it needs to be 110v for US/Canada.

Consider impact shorts or a helmet if he doesn't have either. Both are important and good buys, but not something many people want to part money for..

Lucky lad - Canada rocks -boarding there is seriously good, doing a season out there wow lets just say I'm jelous.
For a season he's going to need heaps of base layer kit, so thermal vests longjohns and boarding socks, its maybe to your mind not the most exciting of gifts but believe me having plenty good clean kit makes all the difference especially at close to 40below freezing. He'll appreciate it BIG TIME!
