the only way to do it right is for a private party with a venue booked for it and paper work to prove venue

That only aplies to duty free or vat free like they call it these day

If you are going to be driving off the ferry and buying in France then what you will be buying is "French Duty Paid" and there is NO limits

I used to work in a beer yard over there so ask away

We had regular customers coming in there little pug pick-ups and used to cleverly load it up with 80 cases which is a pallet.
Escort 55 vans can hold 70
VW LTS used to carry 200 casses
If you have Balls of steel and a hgv then you can and some do i might add bring back 1760 cases
Every time i came home i used to bring a bit of baccy, i was a heavy smoker you see and i liked a can of Fosters so i used to bring back 15 cases
I never pushed the limits to much as Customs got to know my face even thou i used to move between the tunnell, Hover and ferry as they all used to offer deals so i would obviously go to the best.
If its French Duty paid then there is No limits as long as its for you and you dont intend on selling it and make sure you have a reciept as you will be asked if you get pulled into "the shed"
Dont be cocky as they are after all the most powerfull law going.
You dont even have to take Euros as there is enough cash & carry's over there that takes £££.
directions from the ferry port :-
Exit onto the motor way and keep RIGHT for about a mile or so and you will see that the motorway splits. Take the exit marked "Centre Ville" and follow it round and take the first exit off and you will find a big Cash and carry right on the edge of the Round-a-bout. After you have stocked up with good old British Beer you ewant to pop back on the motorway up to the next Junction and take that exit. then left at the top of the road and follow it round until you get to a Manhoosive Hypermarket "Aucion" were you can get all your usual French stuff and dont foget to fill up with Petrol as its quite a bit cheaper over there.
If its Fags and baccy you are after then you need to pop up to Belgium
Itys not as bad as you think and is actualy a nice drive up the Motorway and will only take you about 1/2 hour. Just take the Motorway signposted to Dunkerque and you are looking for the signpost for "Addinkerke".
Easy to spot as all the Road Signs in France are Blue yet in Belgium they are Green and Addinkerke is the First Green one you will see
Anyway, take that exit and at the top of the slip road turn left , then straight over the round-a-bout and you will find yourself running parallel with a canel. You go down this road for about 1/2 mile and you cannot miss the "Baccy shops" all lined down on the Left.
There is a Garage at the end of the Village which is even cheaper than France for Petrol so what i would do pal is get of the ferry and head straight up to Belgium and get you fags,Petrol and Chocy. Then head back to France for the Beer. Dont worry to much about times as you can get on any ferry if you miss one even thou it states a time on yours.
