www.vmware.com

if anyone wants to actually try this and needs help then just ask. not done it myself but sure it'll work fine with Serial Ports
What advantage does that give you when you are in the mapping software?
None that I can think of.

Just adds an extra layer to hang or crash.

Old laptops FTW in my opinion.

Chip what about dual boot on modern laptop? YUou can boot up from flashdrive or smth, win 98 should just about work.

The problem with old laptops is that they are exteremely unreliable.

I couldnt disagree more, IME if a laptop has been fine for 10 years, it will be fine for an hour's mapping.

I still have laptops/portable computers with every version of ms operating systems going back 20 years.
All still working fine

Prefer WIN 2K for everything personally.
Was the most reliable version of windows IMO.

Also still use DOS for some software devlopment !

Agreed modern OS's just contain far too much irrelevant crap that simply isnt needed just to do some basic communications with a primitive external system like a car ecu, its all just bloatware!

zero advantages.

but will allow you to use your nice new shiny x64 Vista Ultimate or Mac blingy laptop with shonky old realtime DOS software like the SECS stuff.

not everyone has the ability to have a second old laptop, and old laptops are more likely to break and not be able to get spares for etc.

altho what pa_sjo is saying about real time operations i'll have to have a quick look at. not sure if VMware Server or Workstation supports direct interaction with the hardware. Pretty sure it does tho. I know the more advanced stuff does like ESX but thats overkill for a mapping laptop.

I'm going to try it on my own laptop when i get a chance, but difficult to test

and as for my comment about windows 95 being worse. remember that this isnt providing real time operations either. the OS doesnt even support the function, so virtualising it isnt really adding any extra layer of unreliability

Shonky...you cheeky c*nt

LOL, when I developed it originally win 3.11 was new

I did do a true 32 bit windows version but there was no real need for me to complete it as I wasnt selling ecu's anymore !

You are right about old laptops though...

The mapping software has been designed built and tested specifically to work on the earlier versions of the OS.

To move away from that to a "it should work" virtualisation that the ECU manufactureres have never even seen let alone tested the software on is bad practice IMHO

Assumption is the mother of all fuckups.

chip, what you're describing is one of the main selling points behind virtualisation

in 50 years time if you've still got a T6 ecu you want to map, and the software doesnt work on Windows 2058 x512 edition you'll have little choice but to virtualise.

Yes in 50 years you will have little choice and will have to go with it even if it keeps hanging or causing errors, right now though, you do have the choice...

......I doubt in 50 years time Chip will be worrying about anything other than tuning his wheelchair and how good looking his 18 year old Eastern European carer is.
