Monthly post limit for unpaid members?

Monthly post limit for unpaid members?
While on a brief exursion into evo territory I noticed that on the MLR they limit non paid up members to 20 posts a month.
Brilliant idea I thought, people can still use the forum FOC if they have a query that needs answering etc, and can still access lots of archived information, but anyone who wants to actually be an active part of the site is expected to pay towards its upkeep.
Seems very fair to me, although obviously they've abused it with massive profiteering on the actual membership cost itself, but thats their priviledge of course.
Do people think similar over here would be a good idea?

I'm fine with paying a little bit for the upkeep of site like this one. And I think non-paying people should have some possibility of using it, the same aas I look for information on other froums at times. Good idea I would say.

Im sure more than 1% of regular unpaid up posters would choose to pay the Ł10 quid a year to join up (which could then be further reduced in price of course if more people were paying it)
Plus they could still post anyway, just only a limited armound as they arent contributing towards the running costs.

it would never work over here
jap performance car enthusiasts are used to being fleeced and when you've just lost Ł40k to your local tuner, another fiver's not going to make a huge difference
but when you've used up have your weekly electric bill signing up to passionford to post up, not a lot are going to remain and it'll go the way of interford, big site, with about 3 posts a month

1) less posts by unpaid members means less running costs for the site
2) more people paying means less running cost per person

well i see it as this
You are a car owner on someone elses website. Them who leave if this was to take place shows they arnt fully intrested in this/a website.
sorry but Ł10 a year is hardly nothing.

Come on people, is 10 quid a lot in the UK? You must be joking. It is what, a meal at KFC's? And half of posts over here are about 300bhp+ 2.0 litre turbo engines which costs bucketloads of money.

If you dont post much, you wouldnt have to pay still, as you wouldnt go over your (on the mlr example) limit of 20 posts per month.
If you do post a lot, surely its only fair that you pay for that, rather than someone else having to like at the moment?

I see it that people who although not paying to post, they still contribute to the site by their posts and assistance to others. I try my best to help people if they looking for a part etc....not always with my own pocket in my interests but just to help others ie ive sent out parts needed by others FOC as I had no use to them and they would only gather dust until the day they gotten broken in the garage and binned. Would my rather charitable offerings be considered as a fair exchange to use this site for more than one post per every working day??

You misunderstood, I was saying what the effects would be if the system was implemented, as opposed to just 99% of people apparently leaving and not coming back as per the post I was replying to.

Im not suggesting we have membership packs etc, so no more work involved (other than maybe deleting a few duplicate accounts if peopel abuse it).
And your opinion is your opinion, its not for anyone else to correct

But people dont pay to support the others of this site, they pay to gain the extras that are availble to them as a result, selling parts etc. I have no interest in these extras...deffo not interested in the priviledge of getting access to the where ever the arguments get moved too either as they are normaly just petty ramblings anyhows

My reason for contributing is to allow the site to be viable to continue.

if that happens i will stay away,i dont pay for the likes of pistonheads ,a bigger site, sorry just dont believe in paying membership for a website to line someones pockets when ,with the amount of google ads on this site hosting is probably free to them anyhow............................

money better spent on the engine than joining an internet forum to put 20 in a post every month

No mate, its so small that it doesnt even have paid members at all, it would be more hassle to setup than its worth, its free for all to use and this works just fine for it.
In the case of PF though, where it gets a significant percentage of its income from membership fees, IMHO those fees should be spread amongst all regular posters.

Would be nice to know the breakdown of the ins and outs I guess, so we could all make a more informed decision as the bottom line is that if contributions arent really needed for just posting as the adverts pay for it, and these fees are merely to fund selling and mens room access, thats good news for the likes of me and sbd16v as it will save us money
