Default Whats possible from a standard Cosworth Engine?????

Hi,

What power is attainable from a standard cosworth engine without taking it to bits????? Assuming it has a good enough head gasket already?????
You can only change external bits i.e.. Intercoolers , injectors ,turbos.......you get the idea

Im reckoning on at least 400bhp, probably far more if you allowed to change everything but engine internals, and there no limit on using race fuel.

Well that wont be the limit then, no way.

Its ultimatley down to what the std head and cams will flow with NO backpressure fucking things up, and tons of boost pressure.

So with massive turbo, mental manifolds, etc etc so no restrictions on that front, low charge temps, mental boost, and race fuel so it dont det, you should get some mad power.

Dont know how long it would last, i reckon a fair while TBH as the std internals are stronger than most.

Itd be a really interesting thing to find out actually.

Its not somthing we really do in the UK, push std engines to the limit, we seem to always uprate before anyones ever even broke them.
Places like Japan/Oz/USA they push std engines much further it seems, and they get the results too.

if you are on about still using the satndard head gasket then 330bhp wont last too long without the gasket letting go.

All i have is a WRC head gasket, the rest of the engine is totally standard and i am about 370/380bhp

Interesting thread. Tiff do you have a long studded block or is it all totally standard? What management system and chip are you using.

Tiff...

I was thinking just that re the head gasket...What would a group A head gasket be good for ?? or is this not a lot better than standard??

What involved in fitting a 4 layer wrc gasket......i though you would have to long stud it???

So hows this for a plan of attack for my big turbo escort cosworth...stage 3 at the moment...new pro alloy 500 style intercooler, 4 grey injectors, suitable head gasket and a live map by karl or stu with closed loop lamba????

2 questions on my above thoughts....what boost / power would i then be running and do you have to take the engine out to long stud it??? what are the pro / cons of long studding V normal head bolts..

Thks Malc

Group A headgasket on the set-up you are after wont last long at all.

Karl fitted my WRC head gasket using Standard head bolts and it is perfect. Infact his 700bhp 3DR runs Standard head bolts iirc

My set-up is similar to the one you are after ie, Greys, 500 cooler, head gasket and mapped by Karl.

And to answer the last question it will be similar to mine with 370bhp at 30psi and no need for long studding

I have a .63 housing and it is a little more laggy than the .48 but saying that it still makes full boost at 3700rpm

The .63 just means that it will hold the boost through the WHOLE rev range

mine is only a stg 1 with t34 and 500 cooler running 20psi at mo! and suffer from quite abd wheel spin, even with 17's on! would a .63 housing not make this slightly better?

TBH i dont think the housing would make much difference with the wheelspin issue.

I think it would a bit, as the boost increase wouldnt be so sudden, which is the thing that gives such a sudden midrange torque spike, which is what spins the wheels so easy.

Id get a .63 anyhow jus for more top end, and sort out your grip with some proper tyres/diff/beam

wouldnt worry too much about getting coilovers for a road car, wont improve grip anyhow.

mikes shims do help a good bit and cost fook all, but ultimatley a ZOO rear diff and beam would be the perfect one, jus not the same price range as a coupla lil shims, lol

and decent rear tyres, of a decent width..

As Steve said a ZOO rear beam will improve it no end

OR

Do like i have done and run 235/40/17 tyres on the back (TOYO PROXY T1-S). In the Dry the grip is SUPERB and in the wet it is VERY VERY good compaired to thinner tyres i have found.

I am getting a Gripper/Quaife Diff soon, or Whatever Bernie at CTS recommends

Hi All

Another questions...How do you , especially the bufty boys (I have those tendances ) get your cars worked on... I have made the decision to go 500 cooler, greys , WRC gasket , higher rated fuel pump if needed and a live map from stu/karl but stu would need the car for a week and I presume karl would be about the same......I am in the southend area, they are coventry and blackpool!!!! Not easy to make happen...anyone got any ideas???

Cheers Malc
