Default PC/Laptop Performance Help!

evening all,

just a few Questions that i some help with...

Right my Laptop (running Vista) seems really sluggish tonight, well its the internet mainly, i was just wondering if there is any programs (free) on the net that i could download to see if there is any problems with it, It takes awhile to open a page sometimes, Streaming vids on youtube & such is sucking balls! I have run Windows Defender to see if there was any probs but there was none, I ran AVG the other day (as its been like it for awhile but tonight it seems worse) & all is fine, so i dont think there is no need to run another scan(?)

I am on 5.5meg Orange BoardBand....well i am ment to be after ugrading my package like 2weeks ago & im not using there Livebox routor

so is there any Performance scan program things i could do on here

Compaired to my PC which runs XP my laptop sucks ass!

PS i am running IE7 on both machines

your net speed is no where near where it should be, if your on 5 meg your upload should be over 4000 kb/s, that would explain your shit net browsing! get on the phone to orange their normally pretty good on the phone

That's better but not as much as you should be getting. How is your router connected?
Is it plugged directly into the main socket in the wall or through an extension?
Whichever way it's connected try removing the front cover of your main socket, just two screws and it pops off. If it's a modern box there will be another socket inside, try connecting to that and see what your speedtests are like.
If it's an old box like mine you might want to try hard wiring wires 2 and 5 (I think) from your roouter/extension to the socket. It worked wonders for me.

Pop off the cover and see if there's a socket behind it.

The livebox i found was complete shit, it spent more time disconnected from the net than it did connected, stupid thing. The belkin is definatly better.

And yes 1000 odd is still way to slow, im on 1 meg orange bb and i get nearly that.

Since its slow on both pc AND laptop its defo a problem there end or with your line maybe

while we are on a simillar topic.... i'm not using a filter with my black sky router, it just goes straight into the wall. Is this bad for it / slowing it down at all?

Seems to work ok. just wondered.

Cheers,
Jim

No, you only need a filter for a line used for a phone.

When you get chance whip the cover off and try it. In the mean time get onto your provider and see what they say.

Just for the record I'm now on my PC, and my speedtest result is about double my laptop speed.

all the filter does it make it so that you can be on the net and connect a phone to it aswell, without one the phone doesnt work properly

I had the same a couple of days ago after this place was playing up and rebooting the router cleared it, I was getting very slow speeds (less than a meg) but after a reboot I was getting over 4 again.

It might cure it because after the troubles on the board the other day it cured it for me. It didn't show up any errors either when I did a diagnostic check bit weird but might have been a coincidence.
