Default engine blown?

came off a dual carrige way last night and as I came off the round about into the village the engine started to click badly and I lost power, power is fine upto 30mph, but the goes after that and the car sounds like a scooby under any acceleration (eg pulling away) and there is a high pitched screech. its a cvh efi, any ideas? limped it home and it will start, but dunno what it is, oil is fie, no bits in it, nice colour temperature never went above normal,

any suggestions? only need it to last another month or so, or am I going to need a new engine?

Well, you'd need to take the head off.... But you can do it with the engine in place yeah. IF thats your problem. Have you done a compression test to see where you've lost compression?

Yes mate. A compression tester. Cheap, at about 20 odd quid ish.

You remove the plug on each cylinder in turn and then turn the engine over on the starter and it'll give you a reading. You must remove the fuel injection/coilpack multiplug or similar relay so it doesn't start on you. Then you'll have the compression figures.

If one or two is low, you can then concentrate your efforts there to see why it's low. If they're all fine time to investigate the ignition system.

go to your local car spares place and get a compression tester Ł10-Ł15. Whip the plugs one at a time and screw the tester in and then turn the engine over. I have been there my self and it turned out i had burnt a hole through a valve and a had zero compression on one piston and it sounded like like a scooby.

more than zero hopefully!

you will get an idea of pressure from the good cylinders and it will be obvious when you see a fault.

nope, couldnt get one in the motor factors down the road and with no car its too far to the next one, will get one before the weekend and hopefully have a go sunday.

Ried, I can see what you mean, but is this common/surely it would happen under load not cruising?

you would really need to take that piston out to find your answers. If you say it was knocking it is likely to be a big end bearing failure but until you take it out you wont know for sure
