im sure its been on here before that in sum circumstances you can get the plate back without the car being put back on the road.not sure how excactly but one of my friends works at dvla so will try finding out for you what can be done if anything.

It doesn't have to have MOT or Tax bust does have to have been taxed within the last 6mths and the MOT has to have expired within the same sort of time-period.

I know that's of no help to you but thought it'd clear some things up.

Ask the DVLA how much it will be to buy it again. It'd be worth contacting them to see exactly where you stand.

I'm nearly 100% sure it has to have mot, because I think I saw a plate on a car that was being sold with no mot and I was going to buy the car just for the plate but I checked it out and you can't take them off if the car isn't mot'd. I don't know whether it has to be taxed though.

SiB - That's OK as long as they don't ask to see the car. Happened to myself and a mate when we tried to get a number off his old car.

The car was scrapped years ago, but he still kept issuing a ticket for it every year until he needed the plate from it.

Sure enough, they asked to see it when the time came. They didn't believe our sob-story and he lost out.

Chop - Just phone the DVLA for te full story but it defo doesn't need to have current test and tax, just recent. 2 years is too much tho.
