just ring them and explain that youve just realised that youve never paid water rates, what exactly can you do. They cant expect you to pay a 3yr water bill instantly, so ask if it can be repaid on top of your payments that should commence straight away.

well tbh you should have had a letter when you moved in saying that you are on a water meter ( iirc its a meter if you have a new property ) and therefore you need to set up a payment method.
BUT its also your responsibility to pay your water, you know its not free and they would more than likely use that argument if you try and challenge them.
It probably is 50-50 but your still gonna have to pay for all of the water imo.

They will realise one day mate. I tried that with the upkeeping of the grounds (Grass ect.) I never paid anything and was never asked so I just ignored the thought untill I got a bill for over £2k, I tried to argue it but it's written in the title deeds of my house that I contribute towards it. Gutted.

Aren't all new builds put instantly onto a water meter............
If so just say you haven't used any water over the last few years and give them the latest reading, however if the meter started at zero (I'm guessing it did) than they got you by the balls!!!

If you tell them they WILL charge you for the entire time, ignorance is no defence, and they won't do any of that 50/50 stuff. You either have to cop for the lot, say you've just moved in and want to set up a direct debit, or just keep quiet and never pay till you move out.
In out last house the previous owner kept paying our rates by direct debit (silly cow). Seeing as she messed us around with the house sale we let her pay for two years. Luckily our neighbour worked for the local water company, and a couple of months before we moved out she quietly changed the records so it was in our name.

i know someone who dodged buisness rates for years until they sent someone round spying and asking q's,the upshot was they said they had just moved in and would be glad to pay from the date last week upon moving in
if it was me and tried being honest i would get a huge bill and treated like a theif and bailiffs sent round, best keeping shtum imo.

our water rates are fixed at £330 a year, so if it's a grand it's a grand
the problem is, do you tell them and take the hit or do you hope they won't find out and plead ignorance about the matter
as the owner of the property you will have to pay so lube up
alternativly, if you are not yet on a meter, ask the people at the water baord to instal one and then think of a convenient excuse as to why no one has paid, saying you had tenants in who sorted everything won't work if you yourself have lived there because when it comes down to it, you don't want the tax man after you as well

Have you had a look at the meter ?
Is it actually working?
If not they couldnt prove HOW MUCH you had ACTUALLY used over the years so there fore SHOULDNT be able to charge you.
If it is then MAYBE BEFORE you mention it some yobs may come damage it making it unreadable, and hence for you actually thinking about it and informing them but again if NO PROOF of what you have used I find it hard to believe they could put a figure on what to charge you
Just a couple of POSSIBILITIES
Steve
