Card fraud how does it work exactly?

I'm away in Sweden at the moment and my bank called me this morning for a fraud check asking if I'd used my debit card in Jamaica for £225 this morning
I said no but there was only one possible place they can have got my details from because I am normally very careful where I use my debit card. About 10 days ago I used my debit card in a petrol station and about a minute after doing it I realised I shouldn't have but it was too late by then ![Wall](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/wall.gif)
My bank ran down my recent transactions this morning and because I've been away since the weekend the petrol station is one of the last transactions.
The only other place my card has been recently is in my hotel room in Sweden and the maid left the room unlocked on Monday but I can't see it being that.
How do they clone cards exactly and how do they use them?

petrol stations for some reason seem to be where a lot of card cloning takes place.
lots and lots of different methods of obtaining the cards details, through to electronic means to stealing them.
Some wronguns can copy the details held on the magnetic strip and record them onto other devices...mobile phone sim cards, top up card ..well any card with a magnetic strip really.
You can have lebanese loop type devices...old skool
I hard one of one the other day, cant remember if it was at work or not, where you bank card gets stolen and they replace it with another stolen bank car (obviously been maxed out). They then get an extended time with your card as you see a card in your wallet byt dont pay attention to the details on the card.

They can also have the skimmers on the floor underneath the till, drop the card a quick swipe and then they have your details.
Hope that helps
Tim
P.S On a good note seems your bank is on the ball, I was impressed by Barclays too when they did this for me after I spent a large amount of money in one go on a transaction which was out of character. It's reassuring.

Using your card in a petrol station is like sticking it to a cashpoint with bluetack and writing your pin in spray paint on the wall next to it.
Must be a culture thing around fuel in general.
Petrol's always been daylight robbery - now the staff are getting in on the act.

If your the type of person that assumes any remarks on skin colour are racist, then you might neet to sit and have a long hard look at yourself and your opinions.
I'll judge people on personality, not skin colour.
As said above the reason for mentioning Black men is the link with Jamaica.
Whats your next brilliant comment on my remarks?
The fact your not racist as you have a Black... sorry AFRO-CARIBEAN... cossie

You managed to read the reply that got you off the hook, but missed the one where I admitted I was wrong for my comments & apologised !!

Being honest, when I first read the thread (my own fault) I didn't see the reference to Jamaica so thought your comment was out the blue hence my post !! Since then it's been pointed out to me & simple enough I was wrong !!

The whole card skimming thing merely collects the data on the card and stores it, then you can use something like a mobile phone top up card to put your card information on and freely use it however you like to get money.

As others mentioned, petrol stations are popular for card cloning.

If you credit cards will ever be safe your stupid. the crims are one step ahead.
i know peeps who have been busted for card fraud in excess of 500k. if it has a magnetic stripe its not safe, even those wifi terminals have been sniffed and details extracted, you just dont hear about it

when you can get a card from teco with a magnetic strip, it's easy enough to clone a card and stick the relevant info onto that card
then you just need someone at a store who won't ask any questions and job jobbed
there are so many ways and means to get a cc to work for someone who doesn't own it it's unreal, one guy got scammed for £6k in fuel on one card bceause the bill didn't come in for a month afterwards and they guys were just filling up everything they could get their hands on

Put card number on fake credit card, go shopping, swipe & sign for it, you get billed!
My card details was used to pay for lottery games, casino, and sex websites in USA and Europe!

From what I was told, if your card gets cloned here and used abroad the bank will eventually reimburse you. If its used over here, it needs a pin number (apart from mail order) and they more or less say fuck off, you shouldn't of given your pin number out and you have to literally fight to get your money back ![Confused](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif)
As well as that, if your card gets stolen or cloned the Police aren't really interested any more and your just given a crime reference number. The banks now deal with card fraud internally and are left to decide if they want to pay you back or not.
Crazy really.
There used to be some right flash twat that used to drink in the same pub as me. He was always or seemed to be loaded and literally throwing money around. He was in the local paper for card fraud to the tune of over £3million. He worked in yes, you guessed it, the fraud dept for a well known bank. Doesn't exactly fill you with confidence

Youd think something like chip and pin would be made compulsory throught the visa/mastercard networks around the world.
So all chip and pin has done is shifted the crime abroad where they are less likely to be caught and bought to justice. Well done muppet banks!!
