I had the same experience as Rolls, albeit with an expensive pushbike

Had it stolen, was sighted by a friend of mine a few months later ( still in one piece!!! ) and was being ridden by a lecturer at the local 6th form! The lecturer was told the bike was stolen and that it belonged to me and just told me to fuck off. I told the police and they didnt want to know either...useless wankers. So I went to the college and saw the principal and told him unless he got his member of staff to hand the bike over to the police then i'd be telling the local newpapers the whole story.

Lo and behold I got a call from the police saying they'd had it handed back the day after and ( after 6 months wait!!!!! for some bizarre fucking reason ) I got her back. Very lucky and I was able to sell her to help pay for the replacement i'd sourced in the meantime.

If you arent pro-active ( in a non violent non risky way ) then the Police are next to useless despite being presented with ALL the evidence they need to make things right. They are only interested in making arrests that lead to convictions not heping victims of small ( to them ) crimes
