Depending on how much you want to put away I'd consider Premium Bonds, you don't get 'interest' as such but you get entered into no risk prize funds, since I've put money in there I've won more than I'd ever have got in interest over twice the amount of time from a bank/savings account.

you have been lucky if that is true, but in over 30 years i never won a penny
there are loads of places offering over 6% on savings accounts atm - see www.moneysavingexpert.com
if you don't have an ISA, as advised above that is the first thing to do as it is tax free. next would be to stuff a load into a pension fund if you want to make regular savings, as that is also tax free.
