Unless above 35k (I think is the figure) in there is no need to worry.
All those Northern Rock wankers queueing for hours, not going to lose their money.

However, the government has since said it would over-ride the powers of the Office of Fair Trading and Competition Commission to push the deal through "in the interests of financial stability", our business editor said.
wtf?
how is that going to make it fair or easy?
it's just going to make the risk bigger is it not?

I'm guessing if everyone rushes to get their money out the bank will then collapse as a result.

So, is it not better in the long run for folk to sit tight?

Same thing happened at Northern Rock, unless I've got this wrong.
Banks cant afford to have everyone take out their savings all at one go.
Its like that bit in Mary Poppins where they storm the bank.

I just paid off a 2k overdraft with Halifax, surely that'll help em out

They have spent too much money making cover versions of popular classics such as "who let the dogs out"

Mortgage, bank, savings and business accounts all with Halifax and Bank of Scotland.

I'm sitting tight this time after previously transfering my mortgage from Northern Rock.

i have cash in nationwide, they told me that if they go belly up then i'd only get up to Ł35k payed out....so just in case of all that seems to be going on at the mo,i decided that i would transfer some money into another bldg society so i have no chance of losing out on my savings to which i was going to use halifax.

i've got a few quid in halifax....

slightly concerned after reading the evening standard..... but then is any bank really 100% safe in these times?

is the goverment still only insuring losses when banks go tits up to 35k?

would spreading it around different banks be slightly safer?

hmmmm. interested in the replies...

but might check a few other sources before taking serious financial advice from PF

I think its safer if you have 35k in a few different banks, but im pretty sure they have to be seperate companies too. So you couldn't have 35k in natwest, and 35k in rbs for example. someone correct me if not, but im pretty sure it's only 35k per company as it were.

if the bank doesn't have enough money to cover it's costs and losses then if it goes to the wall it goes to the wall
you can't just think "there is a lot of moneygoing to go missing so we should save it"
look what nick leeson done to barings, no one bailed them out did they? why should these bansk nowadays have any more help? they've done basicly the same things in betting on shit things and losing billions upon billions (yet, for some reason, i'm sure that 95% of us are reletivly unclear as to where the money has actually gone)

you reap what you sow, and if you sow shit don't expect roses

I read in the paper that George Bush has sent his sympathies to Mr & Mrs Lehman saying it's hard to lose one son but to lose two brothers is just unbearable!
