Default Is there anyway to find out why a car is a cat-d write off?

Friend of mine has bought a car recently which was previously a cat d write off, just wondered if there is any way that we can find out why? Looking at the car visually, and checking everywhere (im a paint sprayer so usually good at spotting these things lol) i cant see anything wrong?

Could have been stolen & recovered?

But most insurers rather than repair just replace newer cars as it's sometimes cheaper for them to do so? They sell off the CATD etc?

stolen recovereds can go on a cat x these days, try asking the last owner, i have asked insurance companys and some won't divulge but there again if the car was fraudulently wrote off you won't get a previous owner pleased to speak to you either
