Rear Mounted Cosworth engine running gear
What sort of running gear/transmission would you use to get the Cosworth engine rear mounted?
What did the RS200's use? and the YB Cosworth RS200 replicas?

Obviously need some fettling to mount to a YB but not impossible.
I think the other good one that some of the RS200 reps use is one of the Renault trans axle jobbies?? Not sure if thats correct description. Think its a good strong box up to 350/400 BHP but struggles after that.
Elite also do a suitable sequential box. Not sure on the number but a mate of mine has one in his 500BHP RS200 rep and seems happy with it.

Great info stu! The 6-speed Porche box seems like it would be a good conversion but would you need a custom bell housing made or something? ie loads of money

the rs200's used a gearbox in the front, with a high speed prop connecting the engine to it and another feeding the rear diff from the gearbox. iirc, the front diff was part of the casting of the gearbox, or at least bolted to it.
audi's use transaxles, as do porche and renault. a subaru box might work if you can make it drive just from the front...

the transfere box is needed to reverse engine drive as the engine is mounted with the front of the engine to the rear of the car not to the front, but has a useful side effect of an easy way to alter the overall gearing if the ratio of the transfere box is altered.
The engine is also tilted over 23 degrees to clear the propshaft (which has a bearing mount to the bellhousing) driving the rear diff.

prob need to be a hewland tranx box, we used these when i was workin with the rotor racing team,
ours were rated at sumfin like 430bhp, we were only runnin around 250 so never had any bother with them,
very easy to strip down and change the gearing as well

There arent many cars with a UN1 box as standard so that kind of narrows it down!!!
If you need a UN1 box I've got one I've just taken out of my 21 Turbo with 79k on it!!

Lotus Esprit by any chance?
The photo that Steve The Youth posted is of my replica RS200, as mentioned previously in this thread the UN1 cant take much more that 300 odd lbsft of torque when used in anger.
Main failings are the overhung 5th gear (like many 5 speed boxes, the 5 speed UN1 is the earlier 4 speed version with an extra gear hung on the end!), the small diameter splined link between the clutch/input shaft, and the first motion shaft and flexing of the first motion shaft between the two ball bearings due to the thrust pushing them apart, these problems can all be upgrade.
I looked at modifying my UN1 transaxle but it was always going to be a bit of a compromise, which could have been acceptable if the price was right, as in low, unfortunately spending 4k+ on a box that is still going to have poor gear ratios and a poor gear change quality wasnt going to be a worth it in my opinion, maybe OK for road use but not for track or competition work.
Luckily for me ebay came up with a Quaife six speed sequential transaxle, which cost quite a bit but compared to a new one was a bargain.
A good source of info for the UN1 can be found at
http://www.un1.co.uk/index.htm
I hope this helps
Jim
A better photo of my transaxle

Could you run a gearbox from a 20vt Passat, cheap enough to buy, will take a bit torque, Martin has already done one a gearbox conversion plate for a 20vt --> Rover so he's half done a 20vt to cosworth one!

hello all.. new here .... interested in the gearbox conversion plates... who's ' martin ' sounds like i need a chat with him

tought about an alfa romeo box they have a lot of stock cars with rear mounted box one of them is the 75 it had a v6 engine at around 300 bhp mine is a twin spark turbo at 500 bhp and the box does fine tough you have to upgrade the synchromeshes

just finding my feet
the porsche box as the engine mounted backwards compared to those engine layouts but the G50 is a very strong box and easy enough to get loads of spares too
another alternative is to have a 944/928 set up but in reverse,, they have the engine in the front pf the car attached to a propshaft and to the gearbox at the back if the car for weight distribution hence they handle quite well

I've got a Renault un1 box in mine. I've been running 400/400 for a while and have no problems so far. A lot of it is due to the car being light.
It's not the best box out there but for the price you won't find better.
All the parts are off the shelf therefore cheaper/easier than all other options.
Ł1200 ish all in, ready to bolt on the car 2nd hand box with new bits needed to fit a yb.

What about the 6 speed Audi 01X box as used in the link below ?

You could always use the Audi engine as well

I think there is a conversion kit for the cosworth YB to the Audi transaxle.
