Based on 20K miles at 15mpg, and 5 quid a gallon, its 7 grand or so in fuel a year, I cant see 400 quid tax making much difference.

such it will have an effect, but not as much as other factors IMHO

20,000 miles a year, christ where do you go like? I do 10 at the most, but i know what youre saying, however nice they may look it will always leave a sour taste in your mouth when you add the fuel bills up at the end of the year, wont seem like such a nice motor then will it ?

I personally do about 50K miles a year, was just using 20K as a "typical" figure.

tbh, how many people " need " an X5 or Range Rover? Theyre not exactly used for offroading, generally WAGs and wannabe WAGs who wanna take their kids to school in " style " so they dont have to bend down to get their munchkins in and out of cars lol.

Still cheap though, but i wouldnt buy one, no fuel economy, they dont look fantastic and tax is steep, what IS appealing about one?

I've towed or bein towed in many things before since owning fords and its usually a pain in the arse. i used the x5 to tow mates astra gsi the other day when the fuel pump died and it was soooooooo easy. it hardly felt like it was a struggle or that there was even anything there

Plus its legal, half the time when people are towing cars on trailers with other cars, they are actually breaking the law due to the combined weight of the trailer and trackday car being heavier than the tow car.

end up as chavs cars. Well already have... seen few with chavs in.. They think they look loaded in em. Even though there cheap as chips. Some will be poorly maintained after being bought by a chav because running costs are so high and will end up tatty and all shit boxes in 5 years.

Chelsea Tractors!

Brilliant stuff. I guess if you can afford to run one you dont give a fuck about the tax.
You'll be so 'slack' from all that fuel duty rape you'll never notice gordon slip it in again for the road tax.

Get one Pre March 2001 and you pay the tax based on engine size.

From 1st March 2001 the annual car tax (or Vehicle Excise Duty - VED) rates are determined by CO2 emissions and type of fuel used. This information is on the car’s log book - also called a V5 document.

If your car was registered before the 1st March 2001 then car tax is based only on the engine size, with one rate for engine sizes up to and including 1549cc and one for engines over 1549cc.
(Extracted from http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/road-tax/)

Job done.

the higher tax only comes if the car is registered after that date.

I watched Fifth Gear the other week and even tuned cars are still going to be taxed on the basis that the engine is the same as the one that came out the factory.....

They even said you tax and pre 2001 Ferrari cheaper than a Peugeot 307.

Exactly, people who run these are not worried about the £4 a week tax increase Any of the quality 4x4's are worth it just for comfort and the toys, its the 12 mpg that hurts

Bargains

On the flip side, I bought my 06 MG in Jan and due to the current climate and £400 a year road tax I would be lucky to get £4500, which is half what I paid for it, hind sight is a wonderful thing Wish I could have my 9K back and buy an A4 / M3

alot of people also forget, if you use a big 4x4 to tow a trailer for business use, and the train weight is over 3500kg....legally you need a tacho aswell, we have taken action against a few recently
