Default how long till you get a ticket

just wondering how long it takes to get a ticket if you go through traffic lights if it has changed to red?

i've accidentally jumped a set of lights before and never got as ticket, i suppose it depends if there is a copper watching, or maby a camera on the lights, even then you might not get a ticket. Is your car registered to you?

did it flash? i believe theres sensors in the road that trigger the camera if you cross them after the light has gone red. if you havent heard in 3 weeks id consider it a lucky escape. 3 points for jumping a red light has more of an impact on your insurance than 3 points for speeding.

the sensors are usually a wire buried under the tarmac stretching across the lanes just past (1m possibly?) the traffic light/white stop lines . if your sure it was orange when you passed you should be alright.

did it definitely have a camera on it?
pretty sure the only one's you get tickets for are if you go through one of these

if it was one of them, i think normally its within 14 days, otherwise you should be ok

What you think is a camera is more than likly just a MVD - microwave vehicle detector. It tells the signal controller when there are vehicles on that approach.

im sure i read that the lastest generation of cameras dont flash so you dont know youve been caught until it falls through your door? unfortunately youll just have to wait and see what comes through your letterbox in the next 2 or 3 weeks.

But not enough of a worrier to figure that the light might change as you approach, and slow down, in case you meet someone else making a grand-prix start from the other side?

like i said im 99% sure when i went through it was still orange, but theres that 1% chance that i passed the actual light as it changed to red ,but when i went past the light i was watching it and it was still orange up until the point that i couldnt see the light anymore. the only real reason im worried is because the car behind me that was following closly had more time to slow down and stop.

But as i said im 99% sure im ok (crossed fingers)

Sounds like you went through it literally as it changed to red, you most certainly won't get done for that.

The Notice of Intended prosecution (NIP) should be issued within 14 days. If they take longer than that you can reject it. It's not the date that you receive it that's important, it's the date they issue it that matters.

The Police have to prosecute you within 6 months of the alleged offence, but the NIP has to be issued within 14 days.

Issued means dated and put in an envelope, it's not the date it has to arrive by.
It allows for snail mail, DVLA error etc.

As above, I got a ticket three months after the event.
My car was registered to Vauxhall, managed by White Arrow, and leased to my employer.

First NIP went out on time to Vauxhall who replied giving White Arrow's details. After that there is no timescale for the cops to stick to so long as they get the prosecution completed within 6 months. So White Arrow replied with Hertz details, and then Hertz replied with mine. All takes time.

As it happens, my ticket turned out to belong to the driver who delivered my new car caught while taking the old car south! So I held on to my NIP for as long as possible before replying and giving his employers details. If everyone did that there is a slim possibility it would time-out before they could do him.

14 days.

Note that is the time they have to issue the NIP to the Registered keeper, not for it to be received.

im pretty sure unless it had one of those cameras i put above you'll be fine
the little black square things on top of the lights are normally sensors.
Normally there are signs warning of a traffic signal camera too, i'd imagine you'll be fine!

If you get points for jumping a red light, only added £20 to my insurance for the rest of the year and my premium dosnt really reduce much if i take it off. I dont think they take it that seriously as if the police thought what you did was dangerous they would persue it further. The photo's they get of you are quite detailed. I nipped through a red to turn right after a que of traffic, didnt notice the HUGE camera about 10 yards back from the lights. And for it to get you i needs to be the big unit set back from the lights.
