Default Moving the radiator to the boot - ideas?

I need a bigger rad and the only way i can do that (without chopping the front of the car out which will look whack) is to move the radiator to the boot.

Now im ok with this but i need to know where i stand with regard MOT and legality. Anyone know?

Also the other problem is Airflow - obviously i will need some way of forcing air over the radiator and out the boot floor - do i use 2 ERST fans - one on continuosly and the other when temps rise or do i use perspex side windows and have ducts down to the rad?

Any ideas, pictures of cars with rads in boot or anything that i may find helpful is greatly appreciated.

Mark

Hi Mark , why not cut a scoop into the wheel well to force the air in? and the perspex/NACA ducts on the windows you told me about will look cool and will help, as will the fact you'll be running alot more water than standard so this will help as water absorbs so much more heat.

Andy,
I'm trying to keep it all standard on the outside - although if i need to have the perspex sides and ducts due to cooling issues i'll have to do it, but i do think having two great big dirty ducts down to a radiator gives the game away about having something tasty under the bonnet

Why do you need a bigger rad? If you are overheating its almost certainly because your rad is fooked or not positioned correctly or you have a silly intercooler in front blocking flow...

I think what you really wanna say is 'I want a funky bling rad in my boot!'

And thats cool man

Porkie I think the main thing with Mk1 Fiestas with turbo lumps is the space up front or lack of, plus Marks running a charge cooler.

(and he is partial to a bit of bling as well )

so what you suggest instead of a 'silly intercooler in front blocking the flow?'

ive had one and dont really want another. and wanting a big power S1 in the future what are the best options??

Look at the rallycross cars photos. They all have rads in the boot. Usually fed with air through the cutout in the side of the car and a huge pipe like the ones used for fireplaces.

You might want to use two rads one smaller in the front and the other in the back.

Wayne I had already thought about it!!!

The blue WRC Escort at ND had it done and it looked superb!!!

By the way Wayne, all your stuff worked unbeliveably well out of track!!! Shockingly good in fact!!!

600bhp car screaming around a track and I saw charge temps no higher than 40 as I remember and water temps never went above high 70's!!!!!

PROALLOY

Bet a decent thick well designed Rad and maybe cooler combo from the 'waynster' could sort the Fiesta out...

Are you water coolering the Turbo on the Fiesta as well?

Responses below:

Wes: yeah Slobbes one is a right animal, I dont realy want to cut away a section of the floorpan like he has though!

Porkie: although i am partial to a bit of bling - its purely for the fact i cannot get a rad and fan upfront without chopping out my front panel (the turbo is just too big), which totally goes against my principles and the fact the car was totally restored 4 years ago and I dont want to start hacking about just for the sake of it.

Lewis: Yeah tom did say that the rad in the back was the best thing to do - using another electrical pump pushing the water back to the engine.

Azrael: I'll check out the pics - are they in another thread? or do you just mean to do a search on google?

Thanks all for the comments so far

There are some here on passioford but you can find LOTS more on the internet.

Here is my friends site you will find lots here - might interest you. On the internet you can look for photos of Per Eklund's Saab, Hansen's Xsara and Kuyspers's Focus. They are the best in rallycross so they have it done probably the best way possible.

Rad in the boot has a huge advantage in the size of the intercooler you could have, it could be freakin huuuuuuuuuuuuuge.
