Default Benefits of external wastegates?

What are the benefits of running an external wategate compared to an internally wastegated turbo?
Is it worth the expense involved in going external on a GT30 or GT35 turbo?

What are the benefits (if any) of having an external wastegate when the turbo in question (REAL or otherwise) comes std with no wastegate fitted but it is available with an internal wastegate as a cost option?

If properly designed, the external wastegate set up will have much less restriction in the turbine area and more accurate boost control due to the ability to have a much larger wastegate (which is restricted by the available space if it is internal).

Obviously the downside of this is the extra ancillaries (therefore cost) to fit such a set-up, plus the extra space required.
