Default Anyone owned a R5 GT turbo

I've been looking on e-bay & pistonheads for a cheap car to do some trackdays in at Lydden as its just down the road from me & one of the cheapest tracks at £130 a day. I've been looking at Golf Mk2 GTi's & 205's but i want to spend as little as possible,at most a grand all ready to go & as i don't have a trailor it will need to be MOT & Taxed to get to & from track, it won't get used at any other time as i have 2 other cars & a van so car will be purely for track so body/paint/dents not important as long as its solid. Just been chatting to a guy at the end of my road who has 3 5GT turbo's & wants £500 for a G plate Raider completely standard owner before him was a woman had it for 14yrs, needs a drivers door as dented so bad it only just shuts, front bumper is tapped up & generally has a lot of scratches chips etc, engine is bog standard & starts on the button. Obviously i will need to spend some money on it to make it track worthy, it has MOT 30/11 & 9 months MOT. Been looking at prices of these today & 5 turbo's seem hard to get hold of cheap. As long as its mechanically ok does £500 seem about right & would one of these be good fun run at around 150bhp or so with interior stripped ? I'm thinking it will be to fragile, does anyone know if the raider interiors are worth anything the interior & door cards are mint. Tax is only £66 for 6 months & £150 insurance for me

Cheers Simon.

Raiders were nice little cars back in their day, I had many hours of fun with them.
A neighbour of mine has a 5 Turbo nice car, the owners club seems to be very good, currently an open forum too I believe rather than exclusive to members.
Modified 5's are mental quick up the 1/4.

Correct.

For a cheap track toy i would steer clear of most oldskool turbo motors.

Yeah ! R5 with a wide boy raider kit, with 17" split rims and finished in lime green. I enjoyed all 4 month of owning that car.
Everyone has a blip on their car history and that was mine. lol nice car but not in green with the Ali G "Phat" boy kit.
lol

R5 is not a track car, CC is to small as is the turbo, and cooling is crap. spend a lot of money on it and you will have a quick turbo, till is blows again, again again.

I don't want to make it mental quick as it needs to be reliable on the track or as reliable as it can be, most i'd be doing to engine is exh, filter, icooler all of which i can get secondhand from the guy selling it as he has loads of spares, then setup the carb to run a few more psi. Will standard brakes be anygood on track as they are only 238mm behind the standard 13 inch wheels, at a guess i would say a stripped out 5 would weigh about 750kg ?

i built a low 12 second qtr 1 in 2005, owned r5s for 2 years in total and what u hear about them is bollox

kind of like the chocolate piston thing with subarus

the 5 turbo engine is an extremely strong engine and will not break if used CORRECTLY

how many of u can think of a standard engine that you can run 2bar of boost on a gt28rs turbo all day and it be fine?

what most people do is fun standard carb and turbo then turn the boost past 13psi on a bleed valve, that caused head gaskets or melted pistons.

my advice is get one, they are great fun, with decent tyres and a set of konis they handle really well(i was overtaking teg type rs at donny)

the standard turbo will be ok for up to 16psi, but at that ull want to put a 135 jet in the carb to give u adequte fuelling.

if u can get a bigger intercooler go for it, but i was running 20psi on a trackday with standard cooler on a t3 producing 175bhp, ran it all day long and didnt miss a beat.

on the breaks side ull be suprised if they are working properly how good they are, i strongly advise u to buy some ferodo ds2500 pads as it will make the world of difference, never had problems stopping at donny lap after lap.

if you have any questions, pm me as there isnt much i dont know about them
