Default taking bankers draft

i have someone interested in buying something using a bankers draft. i have set of wheels for 350 but he said he is sending me 400 and will arrange shipping himself, he is in sweden. Now he said he is sending 400 and if i could take the difference from asking price and send the money on to the shipping company.

tbh im all bit confusing with shipping etc, but i have never taken a bankers draft. what happens pay into bank and is it instant? also what can seller do re: claiming money back etc?

i believe a bankers draft has to clear the same as a cheque. its not instant according to lloyds, making them pointless really.

Probably a fake bankers draft and by the time its noticed, the goods are gone. I know someone who was stung for £2500 on a bike. fake bankers drafts are a major problem at the moment, or were a couple of years ago at least anyway.

There are a lot of fakes and i would'nt touch one. When the bank gives you a banker's cheque, the bank takes the money from your account and gives you a cheque in their name for you to buy whatever with, so a genuine one will not bounce and is as good as cash but still takes time to clear. He will be thinking you will think it's as good as cash, send him the goods in the meantime and then the cheque will bounce. How do you tell a fake ? . . . exactly ! There are other ways to pay so fuck him off IMO

A genuine one is as good as cash as it won't bounce but it still has to clear like normal cheque.

as your bank about clearing times just to make sure but if you do that then it should be fine. is there a significance in the scam to him paying extra ? is it perhaps the bankers drafts could be stolen so its not possible for him to give you one of the correct value?

Tell him if he wants to send you a cheque that's fine but you won't be sending any items till it clears.

It does'nt get any special treatment in the bank, they just class it as a normal cheque. It takes the bank a few days to process the cheques etc. Nothing to do with whether it will bounce or not.

I don't get it either - but it is the same when we take payment by postal orders. They have to clear too - even though they can't actually bounce!!

Like i said. If he has a GENUINE draft then the bank already have his money from his account and have given him a cheque from them, which is guaranteed not to bounce (although it will still have to clear). If it is fake, then when your bank presents it to the bank who has supposed to have issued it,they obviously won't honour it. Your bank (and you) get no money. That's why i would keep your wheels till you get payment.

Interesting read on dodgey drafts, you may find it helpfull

I had a dealing with dodgy bankers drafts at the end of last year. I was told by the bank that I took it to, that a bankers draft has two states, the most important one for us is called "Given Value" which happens approximately four days after it being "Cleared"

However the real issue with this type of scam is that you can draw upto all of the money from the bankers draft that has cleared on day one, spend it, pay off debts etc... and on the fourth day the bank does the transaction so it goes into the "Given Value" State where the physical action of transaction between banks takes place. If for some reason the draft is fake and sort codes, and account numbers are made up, etc.... the bank's are unable to offer the "Given Value" state and instead bounce the bankers draft and subtract that amount from your account like it had never been there at all.

If like most people do, you've already spent the money on day one, then it will put you over drawn by the amount of the original draft meaning that your unable to pay back what you've already spent, and leaving yourself with no car, an overdraft with fee's and interest that the bank need you to pay back to them. All this time you'll have major problems in reporting it stolen to your insurance company as you have your signature on the V5 Document for the car your reporting as being stolen.

The scam comes in many forms and the bankers draft that I received coming through sure looked genuine, silver foils on cheques were present, under a magnifying glass they look the real deal, even down to have perforated enges where the cheque appeared to have been pulled from a Cheque book. Lucky for me I was suspicious and when I tried calling the bank from information based on the address I found from the internet, the address was genuine and it was a real bank branch, however the sort codes, account numbers, and account name was made up.

The only thing I can suggest guy's is that if your taking bankers drafts from your new owner of your pride and joy, test the water first with a cheque from the same account for a small amount like 10 pence, just enough to see if the account is real.

There is a link for similar type bouncing drafts issued from the police.

yes a scam, often the shipping company is bogus, you get the fake BD, stick it in the bank. While there you have a cheque for the shipping made out and would naturally post it, after all the bank just took the cheque so everythingmust be ok?

Then post the shipping payment, then the the BD you recieved is rejected a week or so later. You may or maynot have sent the item, but they have you 50 quid regardless.

They do this to 1,000 people and 100 take the bait, you do the maths. after a week or two period, they close up the shipping boank account and ofski with your 50 quids.

It happens either like matts1 posted above, or they have someone over here (or in fact are even fully operating from the uk), you bank the draft or keep it for the time being (assuming its as good as cash as many do), you meet the 'shipping agent' with the wheels/item usually the next day after getting the draft, you hand the wheels/item over and give him a cheque for £50 or whatever (the difference, hence the draft is always more than item is), so they then get the wheels/item AND your £50 or so. Then a few days later you realise the draft was fake and youve been scammed.

Most scams like this are usually done with cars or more expensive items/goods. So they send you a draft for say £3000 + £2000 for the 'shipping agent', so £5000 in total for the £3000 car, you then give them the car and £2000. Not good and a shame that so many people get stung by it.

The other one is to do it all by bank transfer, as even bank transfers take time to clear, so they do the same as above, then cancel the transfer at the last minute once theyve got your car/item/goods, and very possibly the 'extra shipping amount' you gave to the 'shipping agent'.

often it is greed that they play on, ie your car is up for 2k, they say "your car is worth 4k over here but you can't get hold of them. I will pay you 4k for your car"

then follow up once the seller is hooked with either the shipping and BD scam or bank details scam.

Greedy sellers see pound signs and ignore the warning sighs.
