1st one in my opinion.
Every Big LCD/Plasma tv i've seen with normal tv on it has been pixelated, piss poor performance in my opinion. And only any good if you are to blow money on Bluray, and SkyHD, so basically a right royal rip off.

Bit of both. The first large flat panel plasma's were "EDTV" - 480p low def monitors for displays. These ended up being migrated to use in the home by people wanting large widescreen TV displays. Since they were low def, enlarging resolutions to that physical size showed up flaws. So HD kind of had to come about to increase the resolution of TV pictures to make use of the extra size area of the screens. As TV pictures got better and higher quality (ie, broadcasters using higher bandwidth for TV picture transmissions, digital TV signals as opposed to analogue, and DVD films using larger disc space for higher bandwidth (which means higher bit rates, thus better quality) plasma, and LCD, screens got larger, and as such HD pictures got higher resolutions (hence 720p, 1080i, and the current daddy : 1080p)

So it's both really - one needed the other to pull it off...
