Vanos troubles are slightly exaggerated IMO, the evo is defo the one to have!

just avoid it if the vanos is noisy, and when you do buy, make sure you look after it with regular vanos filter changes and oil changes. (vanos filter is like a fiver or summat.)

erm.........

ok, if youre looking to buy the best advise i can give is to not discount either, but the car on it's individual merrit rather than what one it is. there's really not much in it to make one "better" than the other.

the evo does seem to be slightly more high maintenance than the 3.0, but if it's well serviced it should be ok.

vanos is expensive when it does go wrong, and it tends to go wrong on evos often (3.0 not so much)

which car are you talking about,,,, cause it AINT a M3 E36

evos are faster on motorways,,,,,, but feel the same in real time driving ( i test drove 2,,,,, both felt slow but was actually faster than it seemed)

Vanos issue is NOT exagerated,,,, its about the same as cossies melting and with the milage and age of these its a little like playing russian roulette with a semi automatic pistol,,,,,

Ok, the simple thing about the Vanos is that it gets noisy....so naturally from new the owners get worried and BMW replace it under warranty.

Then all of the other owners think they deserve a new one to replace there slightly noisy vanos unit, which then starts the ball rolling....and loads get done.

And for Tiff, what i meant was, that with regular changes you will prolong the life of it, i'm not saying it's not a problem area, but it's defo not as bad as people think.

I'd personally only ever own the EVO version.

Better car all round imo.

i think everyone just shits themselves with the Vanos cos they've heard they are common problems & expensive

vanos motors should be treated on there own merits; if it s noisy; stay away; if its not consider buying it

my friend had a 96k evo; FBMWSH and the vanos has never been changed and was quiet

for 3500 you wont find a very tidy evo IMO, the 3.0l you probably will

Take the Vanos off , problem solved ! Especially if its only for the track , Vanos is over by 4800 revs anyway and you wont be much below that any where .

True, but the fact is they don't ALL go wrong.

It's obvious that you need to check it when buying, just like i did.

Mine was quiet, i bought the car and it was lovely, a proper car!!

No need to put people off buying a great car just cos there are a few stories out there!

when fucked the car can either have bad idle,,, just just be fucked

either way a fucked vanos will loose power,,,,,, and your wages too

its just BMW's version of Vtec

When I had my non Evo M3 I raced a few EVO models and they were pretty equal.

The EVO has better fuel economy due to the 6 speed box AFAIK

its not BMW's version of vtec, they work differently

the vanos merely advances/retards the cam timing (depending on which type of vanos unit is it)

they work differently HOW >>>

tjeu adjust the cam timing to either keep adjust the time the valves are open but all over the rev range unlike the Vtec which ajusts it past a rev range,,,,, its the same thing VVT just not identical in there application

if one was VVT and the other was a super charger then that would be different,,,,, but VVT is just that,,,, go look it up and you will find its the same concept idea done another way

Vtec systems physically move the cam shafts where VVT alters cam timing only.

vtec has 2 sets of cam lobes and switches between them, so you have 2 cam profiles.

vvt/vanos is 1 cam profile that just advanced/retarded

Didnt think it had two sets of lobes JIm?

I thought the rise in oil press lifted the cam and thats what kept the valves open longer?

jims right about the lobs, the pressure moves them over

its STILL classed as VVT though jim,,, as thats what it is

getting pedantic we could do about everything in life that done things in a different way

but Vtec engines are classed as VVT, thats how they are classed just cause one is pully based and the other is extra lobes its still the same CLASS of concept
