BMW owner tapes black car to white

When a BMW 335i owner in Munich became bored with his black coupe, he hired a team to wrap it in white tape. Two days later, he drove home in his refreshed "Alpine White" coupe (with an M3-appearing black roof). No, it's not normal tape. It's a special 3M wrap, and the process is known as "foiling." Apparently, the German military has been using the process (with an olive drab tape) for some time now. Likewise, the process is popular with race teams and taxi companies. Available in countless colors, the tape itself is thick enough to protect the paint from minor chips and nicks, and it can be left adhered to the surface for 3-4 years without damage (!). Adhesion isn't a problem either, as the tape can even withstand an automatic car wash without peeling off. Thanks for the tip Frank.

I read a post on the MLR hinting basic wraps were from Ł1k up to Ł2.5 for a fancy wrap with printed on graphics.

Not as pricey as a good respray, and less permanent and perhaps less damaging to a car's resale value.

I'm seriously tempted by similar for mine.

I know theres a couple of M3 CSL's that are done.

Ones orange and the others green.

Good idea on a car that will loose money if you change the colour.

This has been around for a while now. I can recall, pre-2000, that a certain car maker loaned a demo traffic car to a certain Police force for evaluation.

Shortly before it was due to go back, one of the intrepid pilots reversed it into a gate-post.

To avoid being billed for the repair, said Police force bought a new bumper and had it painted to match in time for the maker to come along and pick up their car.

A few days later the car-maker rang the Fleet Manager to ask about the (undeclared) accident. "What accident?" says the fleet manager, "We've not had an accident".

"So when we unwrapped our silver car, how come we have a white rear bumper?" asks the car maker..

How long does this last and whats it like to maintain, do you just wash and polish it like normal. Realy fancy having my car done in candy red, with my wheels anthracite.

Most of the vans that are wrapped locally are far from flawless.
The wrap has popped off recessed areas leaving a hollow space behind.
There's lots with peeling and scruffy edges too.

Its definately a job that shouldn't be done for the cheapest! You get what you pay for

There was some programme on sky recently, they wrapped an old camper van. Looked pretty good, shame with all the bubbles they just popped them with a pin and pushed the air out to leave a crease

That's on Wheeler Dealers isn't it? That Ed China and Mike Brewer are proper fucking pikeys!

You've only got to look at the way that Ed China fillers over rust most of the time rather than actually cutting it out properly and replacing it with new metal ffs!

Wow! How good does that look? I wonder what it's like close up and if it's obvious that it's tape and not paintwork.

Cant see the point really, fair enough when its a wrap with graphics, but just changing the colour at a couple of K a pop seems pointless.

Kinda cool though how well it looks.

I saw an evo down at MA Developments done the same was, was a red car with a black wrap, and you REALLY wouldnt guess unless you got up mega close and looked at the join when it had been wrapped round the letters of the "evolution" badge along the back of it where if you got up really close you could just see a tiny hint of the original colour.

I might send my neighbour the link he has just brought a new Porsche 997 turbo, in Metallic Light Blue with the vilest interior EVER! Sickly toffee tan colour, which is everywhere, seats dash the lot.

One thing going for it although it clashes further with the Blue the brake kit... with yellow calipers and sexy discs.

That'd be a good idea, especially as you like your track driving (and silver being a biatch to touch up if it needs tidying later in life)
