did series 1 escorts only come in white?

I was under the impression they were all white except 2 black (1 for Princess Di, one kept by Ford) and AFAIK the red ones (datapost?) were originally white out of the factory but repainted afterwards. I heard a rumour there was one grey one but i expect its just speculation.

Seriously though, I imagine, as said above that the red Datapost cars were painted after production by Datapost.

all white apart from
2x black
1x grey (repainted at the factory before registration)
1x Datapost Red (repainted at the factory)
If you see another in a different colour it's just a colour change.

I remember reading about a black one that found its way upto shetland that was now a pile of rust... That might have been the other black one, everything said above is accurate as far as I know.

according to ralleynews one of the black ones has surfaced and is poss going to be up for sale but does need a resto because it's been stored for so long and has got a few bits that are not turbo but 16i and seems thats how it left the factoy to make it a bit softer for royal bums

The car however is genuine black from the factory, which is why i purchased it vin & colour plates confirm this as has the DVLA. Bodykit & a couple of panels need painting to be perfect but otherwise the car is in vgc, no rot at all. i hope to tidy it up & have it for display purposes next year for those that are interested.

I have bought the Black series 1 that was in rallye news, there is no proof it was a royal car, circumstantial stuff but nothing concrete.

IIRC the blue S1 was a standard white one painted for the cats eyes series. From memory it did end up as scrap at the bottom of a quarry in the shetland isles, cos it was rotten.
Princess di's balck one was fitted with a 3i grille from new, but when sold after she'd finished with it, it was re-fitted with the correct 3 bar grille.
I wasnt aware of any other "proper" black S1's but as is often the case, ford did strange things at the time.
werent the red ones painted after production? IIRC they were painted GPO red, not rosso/radient?
Either way, theyre all lovely cars!

what cars you have these days then mate? 500, x pack?
think a guy called jeff windsor owned the diana s1? didnt he sell it to get a 200?
#33
Yes Jeff sold recently, all details on thread in the s1 section on RSOC
Tonys 'other' black one is a bit of a find and may well turn out to be another Royal car.....either way its another genuine black one that has been rumoured to exist for a few years. Just goes to show you never know what might turn up!

Aye still got the 500 and x pack, although x pack is still a bare shell, will start rebuilding her over winter now the S1 is complete

iirc the red datapost cars were orignally rs16i's, ford just supplied the team with all the running gear to convert them to turbo instead of giving them a whole new car, the grey s1 was bought in white then returned to ford to be stripped and painted grey
