I think it depends what power level the escort cossie is at. If you are a big power cossie owner and use it as a second car/weekend car, then its probably a bad idea. But if you have a std one and want a reliable fast car that you can do 20,000 miles a year, the new car wins hands down.
Some people think that because Mike R and Martin H have well sorted escort cossies and spare no expense, then all cossies are like these, but the reality is a lot of people own tired, ropey old cossies that are in dire need of restoration and have seen there best days.
I would wait and see what the new Focus can do before slating it off, what if its seconds quicker to 100mph or can corner 20mph faster than an escort cossie? Would it still be a bad unthinkable swap?

what about the new focus becoming the 'new' escort cossie (i know that there is only one escort cossie) but what if it becomes the defining car for this generation of hot hatches?

Daily driver I'd have the Focus.
As a dream car I'd have the cos.
The FRS will never have the 'pedigree' of the escort and never be as 'special' in my mind.
Chances are I'll never get to drive either.. so its a pointless argument for me.
(Maybe one day when I'm rich, single or homeless...)

3 Door Cosworth was a classic car the day it was launched, a style icon for the 80's
The Escort Cosworth was the same but for the 90's
There was nothing else really on the market that looked anything like these cars at that time.
The Focus may well be a very competent car but it will never be a style icon, a car of a generation, a car that kids saw on the street when they were young and said to themselves 'One day I am going to own one of those' and then 10 years later ended up going out and buying one rather than something more modern.
But thats the problem with Ford, no passion and no understanding of why people love the RS Cars of old, too busy thinking of the money.
And these colours.. whats that all about.
Green ?
People are saying how nice it is today, but remember the Citrine Mondeos... how dated do they look.
But Pacifica & Imperial Blue, Moonstone, Jewel Violet, Aubergine etc etc all colours that still look good today and havent dated.
SO.... stick with your Escorts boys !!

sorry you'd be bonkers
I doubt there are many people that use their escos everyday in reality so for 99% of cossie owners the fact its reliable is not an option!
I think the Focus looks fantastic and I'm sure it will drive great BUT I would be surprised if the new Megane F26R doesn't lap most tracks quicker and make the Focus look lardy
plus you know for a fact that the day you pick up your Focus your going to come across that Escort Cosworth you never saw when you had one and its going to blow you into the weeds which you can then blame on the fact you were running it in
plus £25 - £30K on a car thats lets face it will be worth probably £15K in 12 months time, plus £400 per year tax, plus you can't fettle it through fear of losing the warranty
no thanks I'll keep my cossie!
