Default cutting tiles

looking for some tips please on cutting tiles for my bathroom.

i've got me a plasplugs master tiler cutting wheel to do the mitre joints around windows etc, but have a lot of straight cuts to do also. am i best off also getting a tool for snapping them to do all of the straight cuts as it will be quicker and would otherwise wear out the cutting wheel? or is that likely to lead to more breakages?

tiles are ceramic wall and floor tiles, azuvi travertino, about 8mm thick.

thank you

you need a snap cutter for cermaics

you will need a wet cutter for your travertine

rubi make the best cutters but expect to pay £££s, you may be able to hire a good cutter from the likes of hss

do you know what adhesives u will need?

thanks simhopper it's not real travertine, just looks like it but in cheaper ceramic. the disc cutter bench is water fed and works a treat at the mitres, but i don't want to wear the blade out on straight cuts if a snap cutter will do them without wastage.

i've got all adhesives and grout already thanks

Ive had the same disc on my tile cutter and done 8 bathrooms and only now is it needing replaced. So if your only doing your own bathroom I would use it for all cuts you can. Less chance of brakeage.

i generally don't like to buy cheap and cheerful, i like to buy a tool for life. and wouldn't a better one stand less change of breakages and be more accurate?

sounds good, and i suppose a new disc is not all that expensive anyway, but is it not a lot slower though?

discs are about£4 each. prob slower but he didnt say he was in a hurry handy for "L" shapes and such like. Tile saw was only£15. Though if it did one job it would pay for itself

ive just done a bathroom and a kitchen, walls and floors, just buy a cheap B+Q tile cutter, i paid £18 iirc for mine, has a steel base and lever arm, the wheel cutters are ok, but the waste they create is just unbelievable, but with the tile snapper then you can just so much more alot faster. i also use the angle grinder with a ceramic disc for the tricky bits

a good rubi snap cutter cutter will be £200+

unless your a tiler a basic cutter will do the odd job

just when you mentioned fake travertine.... i thought cheap and cheerful

i will use the disc bench thing to make straight cuts so as not to risk breaking them.

the missus decided that she wanted some inset boxes in the shower wall to put toiletries in, so i've got some very tricky mitres to cut where i need to cut a rectangle out of the side of a tile leaving a '[' shape but with each cut line mitred. misery.

done one with a combination of disc cutter, angle grinder and file
