this may sound a stupid question, but what are the frames made out of on mountain bikes out of interest?

aluminium or steel, or some are carbon fibre etc

Can be made out of various materials, even carbon fibre or titainium, most are either steel or alloy though dependant on intended use and look.

well i have a Raleigh, Apollo and Silver Fox, so if there alloy i can take them to the scrap yard for some money, there shitty so not really worth riding again, also the wheels are alloy i believe?

ok fuck that, but the frames will get some ŁŁ if there alloy i work right near a metal merchant.

from what i remember the inch (headset size) mountain bikes were made from steel. then once the changed that to inch and 8th they were made out of aluminium and later on in carbon fibre etc. could be wrong tho its ages really since i been in that scene.

majority of old raleighs will be made from steel and more than likely low grade steel as they are not built to be used like a true mtb, most common alloy for mtb's is 6001 and 7005, look for a sticker on the seat tube saying what material it is made from

for most jump mtbs & bmx's its 4130 chromoly steel
