yet another capri question...
hi guys. Lookin for a bit of advice. The capri rad went which i thought was due to age. Got it repaired and wacked it back in. However after putting coolant and water in, when i start it with lid off it bubbles over and gets throthy?
I took thermo out to see if would circulate but no. Anyone got any clue's as to WTF is going on. Its just pressurising then pissing otv the top

Head gasket gone or a blockage in the coolant system somewhere else.
Have you tried back flushing the system with a hose pipe ?

if it's not a blockage then the water pump might be fubar
you've got a 2.8 yes? run it without the cap on and see if it froths up
and did you check the fan to see if it was working or not?
run the car until it reaches proper operating temprature and then, and this is the part where i say "don't try this at home kids", try and stop the viscous fan with the wooden handle of a hammer/broom/other bit of stick
if it stops turning the moment the insterted object touches it, then that's your problem, if it grbas the object and throws it throug the bonnet then it's fine
but you really will have to be careful as it's not going to be a mistake you'll be writing up on passionford about any time soon if it goes wrong, just look at the pic of diva when he lost the top of his finger on an electric fan for inspiration

The viscous usually can also be tested when cold, as if the fluid has leaked out that joins the vanes when it is heated enough, it will spin just like a really well oiled bearing, otherwise it will have a small amount of friction to it, they are seriously loud when engaged and sometimes engage with a twang.
From what you say I would see if the water is actually circulating first.

Farmer Giles i'm hoping thats not the case. Try some other things first
I ran a hose through the top hose of rad into the block and also through the radiator. Seems to run through fine. Have flushed the engine several times now as the water was all brown and mank when i got it. All that has gone now.
tabetha - I think the fan is engaging but to be honest I cant hear it. I drove it 13 miles to work last week and didnt get too hot (although the gauge could be naff). Got me there no trouble. The rad went when I left work that afternoon. Literally a mile and the pressure blew a hole in it. The water was only just starting to warm. How can I check its circulating properly?
Dojj - I was thinking water pump too. Without the cap it runs for about 2-3 seconds then gets all frothy and starts to spit out. If I put cap on the froth runs into the expansion tank. Within a second of releasing the rad cap it spits out again.
I tried the test on the fan with a rolled up paper. It chopped it to bits LOL. I cant tell though to be honest with you

so could be the fan then??
Would this cause the water to stop circulating though??
Think I gonna get the water pump off and check it out before I go any further

Hi guys. Got the water pump off last night! Is there any way I can tell if it broken or not before I purchase the new one at all?
Also when i spun the fan it felt like there was resistance. When i turned the actual bracket that the fan bolts on to it became loose. Do you think it could be that the pump was just seized and could be ok now. I cant see anything wrong with the old one but to be honest i dont know much about them.
