the esc cos in WRC form won quite a few WRC rallies when Mr Sainz was at the wheel...he nearly was in the running for the world title until a certain stone ripped his cam belt off.....the Esc cos was HIGHLY competitive in the 97-98 WRC era.....let alone the national level....

what total bollocks of a thing to say!!!
challenging for an overall win and often winning,or finishing in car 70 odd and a 1300cc class win,no bloody comparison.
in terms of success, not many cars have won as many events world wide as the escort cosworth, perhaps the impreza has won a few more,in the mid to late 90's the escort was the weapon of choice for masses of clubman,i can remember competting on an event in 1996/7 and i was car 11 in a lotus sunbeam, the top 10 cars were all escort cosworths and all you could see queing up to start the stage was a line of whaletail spoilers, really awesome sight to see and the front running cars were all proper group A cars, one was brand new and just cost almost Ł200k!!
some events had 20-30 entered, and here we are 16 years further on and they are still winning events worldwide, even at national level here in the uk a proper escort WRC still takes some beating, the only thing is they also take some driving,it takes a very skilled driver to run with one at the front of the field now, impreza's,evo's etc and the modern group N cars are so much more driver friendly, but a proper escort is a real animal, very difficult to get used to and not the best to set up,plus they really only work well in lhd form unless they are sequential so many uk drivers cannot gel with them, often retire with gearbox problems when the problem was the sump behind the wheel changing gear badly!! remember an FFD gearbox is designed for a left hand drive car only,so all the rhd converted cars were just wrong to drive.
ive competted in over 100 rallies,in all sorts of different cars, and beleive menothing compares to a proper group A 7 speed escort for driver enjoyment in my book, they are awesome,i won my first event outright in an ex works escort and its something i wont ever forget.
now then, ford did go one better remember,
the focus world rally car.and iam sure the 2008 version is the best rally car ever built and as the rules are changing i dont think a better car will be made in the future either.try comparing a skoda to one of these then!!

wrc cars are coming to an end, changing to super 2000 cars,4x4 normally aspirated, like being used in europe now,206,fiats,that sort of thing, not my idea of a proper rally car,no turbos, not my thing really.think it will become boring.

how many fooking world championships, european championships and outright national championships has a skoda won ????
back to the original q, the saph wasn't succesfull in rallying because ford motor company only rallied sierras and escort cosworths, i have entry lists and they don't call sierras "SAPHIRE" just sierra cosworth.
escort and sierra cosworth won many championships apart from world title
but the escort won outright victory in europe in 94.
that imo makes it more sucesfull

In the new rules, the WRC cars will have to be based on group N or super2000 cars and can use (bigger) turbo's, larger wings etc. So if Ford wants to keep competing in WRC, then they have to start building a 4x4 focus RS, or develop a focus super2000 car.
And i think there was something with a maximum budget for the super2000 into WRC 'kit', but don't know for sure.
