Default Testing with the Collins chip and Greys

Comparing maps at present......

Fuck me does ignition advance give you more power

S8 with very safe ignition map Vs Collins off the shelf modded to my spec

The safe map just fails to feel any quicker after 1.7bar...even if you crank the boost right up......the Collins is at the mo on 2.5bar peak dropping to 1.9bar and fuck me does it go I now wheelspinning in the dry in 3rd..i have nearly crashed it several times..which is nice Its all over the place..i think i have just found real BHP!!!!...With the greys it cant be producing more than 450bhp as the afr's are not leaning off BUT this is only in 3rd gear as there is NO WAY this can be mapped on the road in 4th it would be too illegal so it could well be leaning in the later gears...so rollers here i come as tbh its never gonna do a top speed run so the rollers will be good enuff for me.....i will be VERY surprised if this isnt pushing nicely over 400 ft lb torque now!

So just got to put the ignition map into S8 (Collins moniter shows ignition timing and its the on boost stuff thats being recorded!)

Off boost it runs richer than the S8 map BUT actually feels more lively..so something has got to be done there too!!!

So plenty still going on in the DIY world.

interesting.

but why not use your superb 'det cans' to dial in as much advance as the engine can take during live mapping, rather than just copying the map from another chip?

i thought that was the whole point of having a programmable ecu and all the 'proper tools' needed for mapping?

foreignRS....DET is a killer LOL.....am i experienced enuff to actually know what det sounds like before its too late?...I feel safer copying data over to be honest in my early stages of mapping...as i get more experience then i will take more risks..LOL....as it is dropping a what 5k engine for the sake of i thought it would be ok...is not good for moral!!!

i understand that phil. but det at off boost or idle conditions is not too hazardous short term, or even on boost in very short term (as that is how stuff is live mapped - by reaching the point of det and then backing off the ignition a bit).

as i suggested before, why not play with the advance at idle so that you are familiar with what it sounds like? i am assuming that det on boost sounds the same as det at idle and is just as easy to hear by using the right equipment?

rolling road mapping

you need to replicate an in car 170mph environment if you wish the map to be worth anything (as you very well know!!)

should have taken it to cov and let him drive it lol

bring it over to the fatherland phil. i'll drive it on boost in fifth down the autobahn for you while you sit in the passenger seat and do the mapping. genuine offer.

nothing dangerous or illegal about it either.

best tell them to run it up the rollers in 3rd then phil, not only will it mean jack but it'll give a nice power hike over the truth too, a truly worthwhile excercise

3rd gear mapped on the rollers is clearly better than custom mapped to the limiter in any gear in the environment it actually gets driven in aye ok

and dingy never mapped my car ROFLOL

Matt...what you on about???...Its mapped for 3rd on the road and on rollers its going for 4th and 5th...which doesnt have to be as accurate as for doin a top speed run.

I was merely pointing out that even if a gota power figure from 3rd it would still be more accurate than the ass dyno!

yea, ignition advance makes a massive diff. If it just starts to det and u back off it isnt harmful to the engine. Rememvber, the more advace u have, the cooler it'll run.

Phil,

One word of wisdom..... don't think just because it wheelspins in 3rd in the dry means it has shitloads of power. Make sure you have your geometry, bushes and suspension checked before making that assumption.

Also be aware that if you actually do have a lot of torque you will have problems running your car on the rollers fullstop. Mine had to be run up in 5th (with 2 fat cvnts in the boot) to aid the traction..... 4th it was jumping out of the rollers!

why bother having the programmable ecu and equip to carry out this exercise then input someone elses guessed data for your engine ??? you may as well have just stuck with a L8

Hi Fagin....everything is new mate...spax adjustables lowered springs..the rainbird rear beam mod, polyrace bushes everywhere...not had geometry looked at though!

Believe me mate i aint experienced a 3rd gear like this @ 2.5bar peak I may have to turn the boost down ROFL....bare in mind i run std comp ratio so torque will be quite high compared to a 7.2-1 etc.

Matt...what you on about???...Its mapped for 3rd on the road and on rollers its going for 4th and 5th
im on about it NOT being mapped for 4th and 5th ON THE ROAD

maybe you need to try one of them multilok things on the gear gate that normally lock it in reverse.....you could maybe get it machined to exclude 4th and 5th

why not fit a short ratio box/diff which limits the top speed to 70mph or something as your car suposedly never goes any faster than that

Think you're doin a great job gettin your hands dirty and DIYing it

What BHP are you expecting when you take it on the rollers? or do you already know the output?

Sorry Aaron....

Well apperently the turbo i am using made 430bhp on a std engine and 4 greys @ 1.7bar held ...My engine has different cams and Grp A head and mant other parts and is peaking @ 2.5bar and holding 1.9bar...so i guess over 430bhp!!!...450bhp has always been them aim....you will have to all hang on and see what happens but its deffo over 400 ft/lb torque!
