waterproof bathroom ceiling speakers
anyone got any experience of waterproof speakers?
i'm looking at fitting a pair in the bathroom ceiling, and want good sound quality (not just background music quality).
as i'll be using a squeezebox, active speakers would be ideal, otherwise i also need to consider amplification (probably above the ceiling in the loft - volume control not an issue as the squeezebox has a variable output).

Too many posts.. I need a life!!
sony as well.
remember that car/boat spkrs are 4ohm, lots of home hifi won't like that. check the back of the amplifier, it'll say something like "6-8ohms"
you can go higher, but not lower (although if you're not going too loud, should be ok)

water resistant speakers and good quality don't really mix. It would be worth getting some quality speakers but makesure they are plastic rimmed. and not paper cone. Don't install directly above bath or shower and i think you be ok.

bose also do a really good wall mounted speaker designed for garden use, they sound very good and i think they are self amplified too
though not ceiling speakers they are very cheep on ebay and ALWAYS forsale due to alot of places using them !!!!!

10K+ Poster!!
If there is going to be no electrics in the bathroom, just use normal speakers IMHO
The marine ones are for boats etc, unless ur gonna mount em in ur jacuzzi

i don't want to fit something and have to change them a couple of months down the line as the humidity has made them soggy or mouldy or something. i'd rather buy proper gear in the first place.
there are loads of options of outdoor wall mounted speakers, but they look crap. ceiling speakers are more subtle

Since the advent of the RIB market, there are absolutely loads of marine speakers available these days. you can spend as little or as much as you want to these days.
Only slight word of caution is to make sure that the resistance of the speakers is matched to the output of the amp, as most marine speakers are geared to work with car style 12v amps (which IIRC work at 8ohm?), and the domestic amps tend to work at 4ohm (May be other way around - as said - been a long long time!)

thanks for all the advice so far, especially about the impedance. although i really only want 2 speakers as the room is not that big.
i know that you're an audiophile Matt, so i respect what you are saying. the squeezebox will also be playing mp3 (mostly 192 bitrate) so the sound quality is not perfect from source. but i still want some speakers with a decent range as i cannot stand music sounding like it's coming out of a biscuit tin.
have you heard a squeezebox? the variable output is on the RCA output and not like the variable output from a headphone socket
need to also source a small amp - guess it can be just a power amp as the volume is varied by remote on the squeezebox?

yes I've heard a S/box but it was through an external DAC and using FLAC so I cant really compare it to how you're going to be using it, although I'd assume it will be more than adequate to feed decent enough noise to a pair of marine/outdoor speakers in a bathroom. Hopefully in the not too distant future I'll go for a s/box duet and rip all my CDs and FLAC and just use Vinyl and the S/box as my sources, but I'm skint and I cant see me affording it anytime soon, mainly due to me being in the same boat as you, jobless
The only thing I would say is that on board/built in digital volume controls are quite poor and remove some of the sound rather than decreasing the volume, although for a bathroom setup I could probably live with it, sounds like a cool idea, get some pics up when you've done it

will do mate if i do it that is. waiting to hear about a job that i went for interview for - if i get it i am moving house so i will not be building in swanky audio gear
any advice on an amp please? will a power amp be all i need? ideally small, it will be up the loft so if possible not affected by dust - but i guess you don't get any amps without ventage for the power transistors? i won't need a massive power output though

Hmmm not sure, depends on how low you can go with the power? some of the little chip amps are causing quite a stir, cheap and small with excellent perfromance, no vents in the case so should be good for reliability in a loft. the Trends Audio TA10 is not bad for the money (£100 ish I think, or less maybe)

Matt - that looks ideal with a low voltage transformer as well. spot on if it goes loud enough. speakers say 'compatible with amplifiers 10 -80 W'. the last thing that you want to do is overdrive an amp and get clipping which can damage speakers.
a squeezebox is a wireless music player. i have all of my music on a little 'server' under my stairs that is hard wired to my wireless router. a little program runs on that server to 'serve' up the music to any connected squeezebox, and i have 1 in the kitchen and 1 in the bedroom. they can play different music, or can be synchronised together - great for parties where you can have the same music throughout the house and/or garden exactly in time
you just have a lovely big display and a remote control to point at it to select your music. you
can also connect to the server software by pc, laptop, mobile phone or whatever and tell it what to play. will be brilliant to have a track of a fart sound and get it to play really loud in the bathroom when a guest goes for a dump

i'm looking at this, as it's effectively 2 speakers in 1. speakercraft DT6 Zero. need to have a listen though.

91db and 8 ohm = very easy to drive Nick, those little chip amps would drive those to ear bleeding levels without breaking a sweat
Quite surprised actually, I assumed small drive units combined with the robust build quality needed that they'd be a really difficult load, not so!!

that's it
the supplier couldn't get hold of the DT6 Zero that they quoted me for, so supplied the AIM7 DT instead which is better
still not fitted yet though
