What a day ,lol

The car was going real well until we ( me and Paul tough ) heard popping and banging from the engine bay , i kept going until the car just cut out and i pulled of the track .
we sat for a while and thought the smoke was from the brakes ( this was happeneing all day so i didnt worry ) Paul then said " that doesnt smell like brakes " so we jumped out lifted the bonnet to see flames behind the engine .
Paul quickly passed me the small fire ext i carry in the car and i put it out
I got towed back to the pit garages but by the time we got back the bulkhead sound proofing had started again so more blasts with the large Fire ext, sorted it until i could get some damp clothes on it to stop the smoldering pad from starting again

What caused it ??

well it was simply that the clutch cable moved and touched the back of the alternator and that caused it to get hot until it fired the rubber gator that sits in the bell housing , and that lit the bulkhead pads .

Other than the rubber gator and the sound proof padding oh and a rather fried clutch cable there is no damage , just a good steam clean and some polish on the alloy bits and a good bufty on the paint and its fine .

All i can say is thank god i had the little extinguisher in the car or i would now not own a 500 .

Thanks to those who helped in the pits running for water etc

Paul

ps, i will have it back up and running and all polished by this time 2moro

The car has no damage to paint etc . the dust from the fire ext makes it look worse than it was
Im prety sure that i will have it all cleaned and polished back as it was ( if not better ) with a few hours work

Really glad this car was saved. Ive swapped my lines in the bay for braided and have always carried a small extinguisher with me. Amazing to think that £10 for the extinguisher and £50 ish for the lines have saved you Thousands. Kinda hits home hard in a scene thats power dominated rather than sensible.

looking forward to seeing this car again soon Paul.

paul i was the lad who was talking to you about the RS500 down at the haynes manual car museum on the saturday. The RS500 in the museum looks nice and it only had about 44000 mile on.To be honest though yours looks nicer than that 1 though.I thought the 1 in the museum could do witn a good polish cause it had a few light scratches on it.

Felt so gutted for you Paul was such a shame.

Looking back though how much did things change when we sussed something wasnt just right, from the laid back yeah its cool we are ok thumbs up to the marshal to the $hit we are on fire ££££££££ scenario.

As so many people have already said though glad its not as bad as it could have been.
