Default Loud stereo causing misfire???

Is this a coincidence, when my stereo is up loud (it's about 1000 watts RMS) I seem to get misfires more often (Cossie). I had a backfire today after turning up the bass for about 30 seconds...

Does this mean I need a capacitor? Or is there something amiss ie. alternator????

Thanks in advance.

if the voltage to the coil is dropping because of it, then yes it will certainly have an effect.

Not just engine side of things that needs uprating to handle more power.
Hell of a draw on charging system that, bigger alt and battery would be a good start.

Yup, will do it, before i stripped and caged my cossie i had about 1000W RMS of stereo in it and the headlights would dim massivley along with the bass.

Sounded ace mind

Could cause weak spark, cause the ECU or sensors to work wrong possibly leaning the car out, or even making the pump run less, leaning it out.

So all in all, not good.

I deffo wouldnt be rinsin out the Drooom n Bayyyyzzz when hammering around in the car, normal driivng only.

yes mate its more than likely causing the issue...might be best to invest in a voltmeter and putting it up front somewhere where you can keep an eye on things when your booming...

A cap will improve things but they are a temp fix and not the best way of going around the problem...the best fixes for you would be:

1) uprate your front battery with something from a van or a diesel (transit battery should fit if its a saph)
2) do the big 3...uprated earth points from engine to chassis, battery to chassis, and a minimum of 4g running from alt to battery
3) invest in a multimeter and run it off the bass amp...when/if it drops below about 12.4v, turn the volume down or you will run into trouble

failing all of that, if you are interested in a power cap, find the biggest one for the money you want to spend and use that....but caps dont last for very long before they need charging to...

if there is anything else i can help with just give me a shout as i supply/install audio equipment for a living

Only got to see how much headlights dim when you operate a couple electric windows together!

capacitors are not worth using. They provide no power what so ever. If you don't believe me try charging a big one up(1 farad), put a headlight lamp on it, see how long it lasts! mili seconds. your amp will draw alot more than that too.

it would be worth upgrading the eartj cables between engine alternator and battery as these always tend to be really small and often corroded.

surely your better off getting a higher power alternator and 2 bats with a caravan charging relay rather than that LARGE list of parts bassboy sugested,,,,, hes not got a issue with the stereo but the cars loosing its current,,, cars run off the batt and the alternator charges the battery,, so getting 2 batterys and a higher charging alternator will helps solve hes issue

PS: all cossies have 097 batts anyway which IS a transit battery unless someones bodged it and fitted a basic sierra batt

oh another idea is to convert it to round terminals and fit a BMW 330ci batt from a covertable model as thats got a 110amp batt but the larges square terminal batt is a 097

ps: i dont fit stereos for a living im afraid so all of this is based on guess work from what you are discribing so could be all bollox

Is always a good idea on older cars to renew earth cables, can cause no end of troubles with running etc on a bog standard car.

your problem is simple your car does not have enough power to run everything at maximum load.

you need more power, a bigger alternator and a bigger battery. fitting a second battery with a split charger would really help as well.

Replace the alternator to battery cable with a higher amp rating as this cable can and will deteriorate over time

This will help along with replacing earth cables and check u have a 90 amp alt not a 70 as they look the same

Fit a vandura alternator 350 amps!!
Failing that not all tranny batts are square post and have not been since about 94/95, You could always use a seperate battery(in the boot) to help stereo, then just a power feed to it this will give a larger reserve, power caps are used to enhance the bass output, they do this by supplying a massive instantaneous amount of current, and will improve a bassy install.
I fitted a Mercedes G wagon battery to my sierra(mk1) years ago, that was 100ah, and fitted in the tray sort of, had to cut the end of the tray off, each end and it was hard up against the inner wing but still about 6" closer to the engine, as it was so long.
Some vehicles run two alternators, you could also change from DELTA to STAR on the alternator, as this will give 1/3 more power, but only at higher rpm.
